Введение
Данные методические указание составлены в соответствии с рабочей программой по дисциплине «Иностранный язык», специальность 280 104.65 Пожарная безопасность и предназначены для слушателей I курса факультета БЖД, изучающих английский язык. Настоящие методические указания включают в себя варианты контрольных работ, методические указания по изучению тем программы, вопросы для самоконтроля, перечень рекомендуемой литературы, указания по оформлению контрольной работы.
При сдаче зачета по дисциплине «Иностранный язык» на I курсе факультета заочного обучения слушатель должен уметь:

Иностранный язык на 1 курсе
Рабочая программа дисциплины «Иностранный язык» цикла ГСЭ.Ф составлена в соответствии с Государственным образовательным стандартом высшего профессионального образования по специальности 280 104.65 - Пожарная безопасность - и определяет содержание и структуру дисциплины.
Курс иностранного языка является самостоятельной учебной дисциплиной. Целью изучения данной дисциплины является достижение обучаемыми практического владения языком.
Программа предусматривает овладение основами общения на иностранном языке (фонетика, лексика, фразеология, грамматика), деловым языком по специальности (профессиональная лексика, фразеологические обороты и термины), техникой перевода профессионально-ориентированных текстов, что позволит практически пользоваться иностранным языком в профессиональной деятельности, а также явится базой для дальнейшего образования и самообразования.
Изучение дисциплины «Иностранный язык» и достижение сформулированных выше задач базируется на соблюдении преемственности дисциплины по отношению к школьной программе по иностранному языку.
Иностранный язык представляет собой учебную дисциплину, которая тесно взаимосвязана с дисциплинами: пожарная тактика, пожарная техника, общая и специальная химия, экология и др.
В результате изучения дисциплины, обучаемые должны усвоить, что знание иностранного языка играет значительную роль в повышении интеллектуального и культурного уровня сотрудника Государственной противопожарной службы.
Государственным стандартом высшего профессионального образования на изучение дисциплины отводится 340 часов. На 1 курсе отводится:
1 семестр: 4 часа установочная лекция, 14 часов аудиторные занятия с преподавателем, 4 часа недифференцированный зачет, контрольная работа.
2 семестр: 10 часов аудиторные занятия с преподавателем, 4 часа недифференцированный зачет.
В процессе изучения дисциплины продолжается развитие навыков устной речи, аудирования и чтения (изучающего, ознакомительного, просмотрового и поискового) на основе аутентичных текстов профессиональной направленности с одновременной отработкой грамматических явлений, наиболее часто встречающихся в технических текстах на иностранном языке, а также с последующим обсуждением прочитанного на иностранном языке. Даются основные понятия об обиходно-литературном, научном и художественном стилях.
Особое внимание уделяется накоплению профессиональной лексики и развитию навыков самостоятельной работы со словарем при переводе неадаптированной литературы пожарно-технического профиля.
В результате изучения дисциплины на 1 курсе обучаемые должны:

ОФОРМЛЕНИЕ КОНТРОЛЬНОЙ РАБОТЫ
1. Слушатель I курса факультета заочного обучения должен выполнить один из десяти вариантов контрольной работы в зависимости от последней цифры номера зачетной книжки. Если номер зачетной книжки заканчивается на цифру 5, то следует выполнять вариант № 5, если номер зачетной книжки заканчивается на цифру 0, то следует выполнять вариант №10 и т.д.
2. Контрольная работа выполняется в тетради аккуратно и разборчивым почерком, ручкой синего или зеленого цвета или в электронном варианте. Контрольную работу необходимо выполнить в срок, установленный факультетом заочного обучения.
3. На титульном листе следует указать свою фамилию, имя и отчество, должность и звание, свой адрес с указанием почтового индекса, номер зачетной книжки, номер варианта контрольной работы.
4. Таким образом, слева нужно писать предложения или текст на иностранном языке, справа перевод. Поля предназначены для замечаний рецензента.
5. На заключительном листе контрольной работы нужно указать список литературы, используемой при выполнении работы.
6. Если контрольная работа выполнена с нарушением данных указаний или не в полном объеме, то она будет возвращена слушателю для доработки без проверки.
7. Если работа не зачтена, следует изучить все замечания рецензента и переделать ее в соответствии с рекомендациями рецензента.
8. Переделанная работа предоставляется на проверку вместе с не зачтенной работой.

A Toxic Cloud
Paris. More than 20 000 people were evacuated from their homes after a warehouse fire in the port of Nantes, western France, produced a toxic cloud of gas and smoke eight miles long.
The fire in a fertilizer warehouse containing hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate, started early in the morning. A thousand firemen and police fought to bring it under control as thick clouds of whitish-yellow smoke poured from the top of the building. The danger to health led local authorities to order evacuation out of the area. Some people were taken to hospital for observation. The fire was finally brought under control in midafternoon.
Those who had left their homes were advised to spend the night away. Schools and community centers were taken outside the affected area.

Beslan Tragedy
On September 1, 2004, at about 9.00 a.m. Moscow time, a group of about 30 gunmen seized School 1in Beslan, North Ossetia, 30 km from the capital, Vladikavkaz. The terrorists took schoolchildren and parents hostages and drove them into a gym. More than 1,000 children and adults were taken hostages. Apparently, one or more of the female assailants so called “Black Widows” blew themselves up in the gym where the hostages were being kept. The gym was also apparently wired with explosives. Thirty or so hostages made a run for it, and were shot at. The culmination of that was an assault of Russian special forces, which used helicopters, tanks, and armored cars.
335 people lost their lives in the Beslan terrorist attack.

What Is the Average Salary of the Firefighter?
According to a 1998 survey by the International Personnel Management Association, firefighters had a medium salary of about $ 20,900 a year, but their earnings depend on city size and region of the country. Earnings for firefighters are lowest in the South and highest in the West, and generally are higher in large cities than in small ones. Entrance salaries for beginning full-time firefighters were about $ 18,600 a year, while maximum salaries were $ 24,100 a year.
Fire lieutenants had a medium annual salary of about $ 25,800 a year, fire captains had $ 28, 500 a year in 1995.
Salaries for firefighters increase with the rise of the cost living. In 1998, New York City firefighters were earning a starting salary of $ 26, 000 with a maximum of $ 39,000 after five year work.

On October 23, 2002, Chechen rebels stormed a Moscow theater during a performance of the musical Nord-Ost. They took about 900 people hostage, including 90 staff members of the theater. The rebel group consisted of 40-50 gunmen, led by Movsar Barayev. After releasing several hostages, they demanded that Russian military forces be pulled out of Chechnya within a week. They also threatened to blow up the building in case of a counter-attack. The rebels released about 200 people, mostly women and children. Three days later Russian troops raided the building. 129 hostages died as a result of a gas that was used by federal forces to subdue the rebels.

Roof Collapses on Crowded Water Park
This tragedy occurred at 7:15 Saturday evening, during the peak weekend crowds. Some of the visitors were at a first floor disco celebrating Valentines Day, while others were there for a childs birthday party. At the moment of the collapse, almost 1,300 people were in the complex, including 200 employees.
The rescue operation was hampered by the bitter cold (minus 18 Celsius), as well as the difficulty of getting emergency equipment to the spot. Rescue workers, using sniffer dogs, worked by hand to free the survivors, many of whom required emergency treatment for injuries and exposure to the cold. The rescue teams pumped warm air into the debris in order to keep the survivors from freezing, most of whom were clad only in bathing suits. By late Sunday, Luzhkov told Channel One television “there is no hope for finding any survivors.” The roof collapse killed at least 27 people and injured scores.

Act of Terrorism or Structure Design Error?
On Saturday evening, February 14, 2004, the massive domed roof of the Transvaal Park recreational facility collapsed, killing at least 27 people and injuring scores. It was the pool area of the complex which suffered the direct impact of the devastation.This area contained a wave-pool, ceiling-high water-slides, a childrens pool and even an artificial beach. It is estimated that more than 400 people were gathered around these points when the massive roof fell from a height of over 30 meters. One of the lucky ones to escape was Roman Yazymin, 29, who was using a solarium on the second floor when the tragedy struck. Suddenly he heard a tremendous crash. “It was not an explosion, but the noise of metal collapsing,” he stated.” When we ran to collect our belongings, everything was covered in blood.”
The authorities were quick to note that the tragedy was not an act of terrorism but that was the first thought in the minds of many who witnessed the tragic accident or first heard of it. If not an act of terrorism, then what? Who is to blame for the tragedy? Anyway, the final word rests with the authorized investigators.

Polish Tragedy
Poland faced a tragedy roof collapse in the southern town of Katowice during a carrier-pigeon show. An estimated 700 people were on attendance at the 10,000 square-meter at the time of collapse. The accident claimed the lives of 67 people, approximately 150 people reported injuries. Several are still missing. Polish emergency crews worked around the clock in bitter cold for three days in the search for survivors buried below the twisted metal and broken concrete. So, what was the cause of the roof collapse? The authorities say that it was the snow and ice that had not been properly cleared from the roof. Poland has been suffering a severe cold spell, and some speculate that could have played a role in weakening the halls structure. Nevertheless, the reasons for the collapse are still unclear and Polish authorities make their best to determine the cause.

The first media reports of the incidents came Tuesday, August 24 around midnight, Moscow time. The two southbound planes disappeared from radars within minutes of each other, shortly before 11 p.m. Officials confirmed that a hijack alarm was sent from one of the planes before it disappeared and that another jet had broadcasted SOS message.
One jet, a Tupolev 134 carrying 35 passengers and 9 crew, crashed near the city of Tula.
Witnesses on the ground heard an explosion from the second plane, Flight 1303 from Moscow to Volgograd with 44 on board when it crashed. The plane fell from 10,000 metres, there were no survivors.
Everything points to the possibility that the accidents may have been terrorist attacks. Experts cite evidence of small blasts at the rear of the planes. In both crashes, the tail end of the plane ended up far ahead of the nose, which, experts say, could only have happened as a result of a blast. Experts said that explosives the size of a bar of soap would be enough to produce such results. The investigation of the two crashes is still going on.

One of the worst typhoons in almost three decades has hit Japan and claimed at least 80 lives and hundreds of casualties. That disaster, which meteorologists reported had wind speeds of up to 229 kilometers per hour (142 m.p.h.), is the latest powerful storm to sweep the island country.
