GREAT BRITAIN
I Lets talk about Great Britain.
The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and about five thousand small islands. Their total area is over 244,000 square kilometres.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is made up of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Belfast respectively. The capital of the UK is London.
The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea.
The north of Scotland is mountainous and is called the Highlands, while the south, which has beautiful valleys and plains, is called the Lowlands. The north and west of England are mountainous, but east, centre, and south-east is a vast plain. Mountains are not very high. Ben Nevis in Scotland is the highest mountain (1,343 m).
There are a lot of rivers in Great Britain, but they are not very long. The Severn is the longest river, while the Thames is the deepest one.
The mountains, the Atlantic Ocean, and the warm waters of Gulf Stream influence on the climate of the British Isles. It is mild the whole year round.
The UK is one of the world's smallest countries. Its population is over 57 million. About 80 % of the population is urban. The UK is a highly developed industrial country.
The UK is a constitutional monarchy. In law, Head of the State is Queen. In practice, Queen reigns, but does not rule. The country is ruled by the elected government with the Prime Minister at the head. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
Foreigners often call British people "English", but the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh do not consider themselves to be English. The English are Anglo-Saxon in origin, but the Welsh, the Scots and the Irish are Celts, descendants of the ancient people, who crossed over from Europe centuries before the Norman Invasion.
The official language of the United Kingdom is English. But in western Scotland some people still speak Gaelic and in northern and central parts of Wales people often speak Welsh.
The flag of the United Kingdom, known as the Union Jack, is made up of three crosses. Saint Georges Cross (English), Saint Andrews Cross (Scottish), Saint Patricks Cross (Irish).
The Welsh flag, called the Welsh dragon, represents a red dragon on a white and green background.
II What part of Great Britain would you like to visit? Why?
I would like to visit Scotland.
Scotland is a small country but it is very beautiful. It lies to the North of England. It is smaller than England, but larger than Wales and Ireland. Scotland is a country of mountains, lakes (lochs) and forests. Loch Ness is home of their famous monster.
The population of Scotland is over 5 million and the area is about 80 thousand sq/km. The capital is Edinburgh, but Glasgow is the biggest city. They speak English, but with a Scottish accent.
Scotland is famous for golden eagles, tartans and bagpipe music... and it's the home of golf. The Scottish are very proud of their country.
III What would you like to ask a British teenager about Britain?
What is Britain famous for?
Is it larger or smaller than Belarus?
What is the population of GB?
Where does it lie?
IV What sights in London would you advise me to visit?
You should visit two wonderful buildings within the City: St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London.
Westminster is the center of administration. It includes Buckingham Palace where the Queen lives and the Houses of Parliament. It's a very beautiful building with two towers and a very big clock called Big Ben. Westminster Abbey-It's a very beautiful church built over 900 years ago.
Picadilly Circus is the heart of London's West End. In the West End there are wide streets with beautiful houses and many parks, gardens and squares
Trafalgar Square is the geographical center of London. Opposite the Nelsons monument is the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. They contain the finest art collections in the world. Not far from the National Gallery is the British Museum famous for its rich library (about 7 million books).
V Do the British differ greatly from Belarusian people in character? Why?
So, I dont think they differ a lot.
The British aren't as conservative as they are thought to be. Their main characteristic is that they are talkative and very friendly. Among other characteristics there are politeness, lack of self-importance, stoicism, emotional self-control. No matter what social class they belong to, they have dignity and self-respect. They seem to be also pedantic, but about every other nation we can say the same.
What concerns Belarusian people, with very few exceptions, I find them to be open, warm-hearted, fun-loving and intelligent.
