Hello, Im ______. One of the issues that arises often is mental health problems.
We have analysts of the Royal College of Psychiatrists here. Please, share your opinions (2, 3, 4)
How should we be handling these young people? Representative of the ministry of health (5)
First of all what sort of mistakes do you think we make? What do parents say? (6, 7)
Teenagers get quite an angry response from the medical staff. What is the reason? Lets listen to the psychiatrists (8, 9)
And what do young people think? Psychiatry students are sharing their opinion (10, 11, 12, 13)
And what about teachers? Do they have any opinion on that? (14, 15)
So we have much to think about because we should act constructively and quickly.
Thank you. It was __________, BBC news.
2 Analyst 1 (Royal College of Psychiatrists)
There is a report based on a survey of parents and young people.
The findings don't make comfortable reading.
It says that there are awful feelings of shame in young people who are in emotional distress.
3 Analyst 2 (Royal College of Psychiatrists)
Yes, it is reported that young people think that mental illness is a sign of weakness.
We've known about this for a long time.
4 Analyst 3 (Royal College of Psychiatrists)
It often takes months and months and months to get some proper help.
It highlights the lack of investment within these kind of services
We see this happen in casualty departments.
5 A representative of the ministry of medicine
I wonder sometimes if we encourage mental disorders by creating psychological service centers everywhere.
Tell them, for heaven's sake, pull yourself together, stop doing this!
It's simply something that needs sorting out properly.
6 Parent 1
We don't know what to do with our children.
It is not their fault.
7 Parent 1
They're very distressed, it's because something is not right with them.
It can be quite a difficult thing to understand whats going on with your child.
8 Psychiatrist 1
In part it is our feeling of our own impotence, we are unable to help properly. And we should want to help patients.
Very often the self-harm is not just something that people are doing randomly.
9 Psychiatrist 2
I think the fundamental problem is the lack of reasonable referral times to specialist services.
Secondary care services are grossly under-resourced.
10 Psychiatry student 1
Even if young people seek advice, most parents admit to being unsure how to help them.
Those who are self-harming don't know who to turn to for help.
11 Psychiatry student 2
It is something that needs diagnosed and treated.
Young people feel that they're weak in some way but they are not!
12 Psychiatry student 3
Lack of investments was mentioned here. Tragically we don't seem to be doing much about it.
13 Psychiatry student 4
There is a growing problem of self-harm and suicide attempts.
Put simply young people are dying. Thats awful.
14 Teacher 1
I agree that self-harm is not something that people are doing randomly. There are reasons. It happens that there are problems with studies.
15 Teacher 2
It's simply something that needs sorting out properly as they say. We should be handling young people with love and care.

…But first - a new report into the growing problem of self-harm (1). Commissioned in partnership with the charity Young Minds (2), the report is based on a survey of (3) two and a half thousand parents, teachers, GPs and young people (4) and the findings don't make comfortable reading (5). Put simply (6) - those who are self-harming don't know who to turn to for help (7), and, even if they do seek advice (8), most parents, doctors and teachers admit to being unsure how to help them (9). Inside Health's Dr Margaret McCartney has been looking at the new report (10).
Margaret, first of all (11), what sort of mistakes do you think we make (12) - I mean how should we be handling these young people (13)?
McCartney
Yeah I mean it's so difficult because (14) I think as a young person even going to ask for help from a GP can be quite a difficult thing to do (15). I think there are awful feelings of shame (16) often attached to young people (17) who are in emotional distress (18), maybe feel that they're weak in some way (19) and of course they're not (20) - psychological distress or mental illness is not a sign of weakness (21), it's simply something that needs sorting out properly (22), something that needs diagnosed and treated (23). And I think GPs will want to help (24) and should want to help with this and I think that in many ways perhaps doctors saying we don't know what to do (25) or we don't know enough of what to do is I think the fundamental problem (26) - for me anyway - is the lack of reasonable referral times to specialist services (27) such as for psychological help (28), for psycho-social help, it often takes months and months and months to get some proper help (29) within secondary care (30), which is not their fault (31), it's because they're grossly under-resourced (32) and have been for years (33). And yet we've had lots of reports from the Royal College of Psychiatrists (34), for example, highlighting the lack of investment within these kind of services (35), we've known about this for a long time (36) but awfully and tragically we don't seem to be doing much about it (37).
Porter
One of the issues that arises often (38), I've seen this happen in A&E departments (39), casualty departments (40), or in my own GP's surgery (41), if somebody comes in having self-harmed for the 30th or 40th time (42), often, and they get quite a - elicit quite an angry response (43) from the medical staff (44) who say for heaven's sake pull yourself together (45), stop doing this (46).
McCartney
I mean I wonder sometimes if (47) the anger perhaps that some people - some treating professionals might feel is in part their feeling of their own impotence (48), unable to help properly (49) and what they can do constructively to help (50) because very often the self-harm is not just something that people are doing randomly (51), it's because they're very distressed (52), it's because something is not right with them (53).
