VOTE FOR THE GREATEST BRITISH INVENTION

The humble bicycle has won a UK National Survey of people’s favorite inventions.

People were invited to vote in an online poll1 looking at the most significant innovations since 1800. The bicycle has emerged as a front-runner in the poll to find the country’s most significant technological breakthrough of the past 250 years. The second most comprehensive victory came in the industry category, in which Michael Faraday’s device for generating electricity won a remarkable 76 per cent of all votes cast. Edison’s electric bulb which replaced gas laps also came high on top, being simple but essential.

The tightest contest was in the Way We Live category, which saw the electricity defeat computer by just two votes out of the thousand casts. Internet trailed behind with only 12% of all the votes. The origin of the computer dates back to 1834, when Charles Babbage created the Analytical Engine, a calculating machine for producing mathematical tables. More than a century later, Bernes-Lee began tinkering2 with a software program that gave rise to the world wide web.

Telephone patented in 1876 by Graham Bell has changed the face of modern communications. It goes close behind the Internet. Given the speed with which these new forms of communication are evolving, it is impossible to predict where these inventions might take us next.
