The United Kingdom and London

The United Kingdom consists of four parts: England with capital London, Scotland with capital Edinburgh, Wales with capital Cardiff and Northern Ireland with capital Belfast.

British islands are separated from Europe by the North Sea, The English Channel (La Manche). The area of the UK is some 2000 km2. Its population is over 57 million people.

The climate of GB is mild. It often rains in England. Rains fall in any season. Snow falls only in the north and west part of the country. The weather very often changes in Great Britain.

There are many universities, colleges, libraries, museums and theatres in the country. The most famous universities are Cambridge University and Oxford University.

London is the capital of Great Britain. Some 9 million people now live in London. The city covers an area of 600 square miles, making it one of the largest of the world's capitals.

London consists of three parts. There are The City, The West End and the East End. The City is financial and political center of London. A lot of offices, banks and shops are situated here.

The East End is the most industrialized part of London. There are many factories. People, which live here, are poor.
The cultural center of London is the West End. There are many museums, galleries, theatres and squares. The Tower of London is the most famous of all the historical buildings in London. Today the Tower is a museum.

EDUCATION IN GREAT BRITAIN

There are 46 universities in Britain.

Oxford and Cambridge, the oldest universities.

A university usually consists of colleges. The departments of the colleges are organized into faculties.

Programme consists of  lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes.

Each student has a tutor whom he can consult on any matter whether academic or personal.

After three years of study a university graduate will leave with the Degree of Bachelor of Arts or Science. He can continue to take his Master's Degree and then the Doctor's Degree.

Cambridge is one of the two main universities of England located at the Cam River. It was founded at the beginning of the 12-th century. The University consists of 24 different colleges including 4 colleges for women.

Each student has a tutor. The tutor plans the student's work and once a week the student goes to his tutor to discuss his work with him. The students study natural and technical sciences, law, history, languages, geography and many other subjects.

All the students must pay for their education, books, laboratories, university hostel, the use of libraries. Very few students get grants.

       

Russian Federation and Moscow

      Russia is the largest country in the world. Territory of Russia lies in the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Russia is washed by twelve seas and three oceans. The longest rivers are the Don and Volga in Europe and the Ob and Yenisei in Asia. The largest lakes are Ladoga and Baikal.

      Population of Russia is about than 150 million people. Russia is a presidential republic. Medvedev is our president)

      The capital of the Russian Federation is Moscow, with the population of about 12 million people. It is economical, political and educational center. The city was founded by Yuri Dolgoruky.

       Moscow is the major industrial city. Moscow is a city of science and learning. There are over 100 higher educational institutions in the city.

      Moscow has a lot of place of interest. There are many museums, galleries, theatres and squares. The most popular of them are the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum.

      The oldest part of Moscow is the Kremlin. The one of the Kremlin towers- Spasskaya Tower is the symbol of Russia and Moscow. It has a famous clock. Outside the Kremlin Wall there is the famous Red Square.

      I think that Moscow is very beautiful city and I am happy, that I live here.


      
Higher Education in Russia

Higher education plays an important part in the life of any country. It trains people to become teachers, engineers, doctors and other professional workers.

There are many higher educational institutions in Russia. Higher educational institutions are headed by Rector.

Moscow State Technical University (MSTU) is one of the oldest and biggest polytechnical educational institutions in our country. It was established as in 1830.       

There are 300 Doctors of Science and 2000 Candidates of Science in university. There are approximately 20000 students concentrating on science and engineering.

There are many faculties in BMSTU:

1) Aerospace Technology; 2) Biomedical Technology: 3) Radio electronics and Laser Technology; 4) Informatics and Control systems;; 6) Power Engineering; 7) Fundamental Sciences; 9) Materials and Technology; 10) Engineering Business and Management; and others.

The “RL” Faculty trains highly-qualified specialists in the field of Opto-Electronics, Radio electronics and Biomedical Instruments.

Training at the Faculty includes the program of lectures, seminars and practical training in laboratories and workshops of the Institute and at various plants.

At the end of each term students have exams. In the final course of educational the students must present diploma project.
