TEXT                            MY WORKING DAY

As you know, I am a first- year student of the Institute of Economics and Humanities.  My parents live in Amvrosiyevka, and I study in Makeyevka, so I need some housing. There are two opportunities for me: I can live in a dormitory (a students hostel), or to rent a flat (an apartment).

I decided to rent a room. To make a rent smaller, I also decided to share my room with another student.

Now let me describe my usual working day. So, on weekdays I have to get up at 7:10. I don’t have an alarm clock and usually my roommate wakes me up and my working day begins. I turn on the radio and do my morning exercises. I don’t have a bath in the morning because I don’t have enough time for it. I just take a cool shower (that’s when I completely get up). After that I go back to our room and get dressed. Then I have breakfast. My roommate makes breakfast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I have to serve breakfast on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I love to listen to the latest news on the radio while I am eating.

I leave home around eight and walk to the nearest bus stop. I live rather close to the institute and it usually takes me about ten minutes to get there by bus. Sometimes when the weather is fine and I have enough time I walk to the institute. It is very healthy to walk much.

My classes begin at 8:00 o’ clock in the morning and they end at 14.10. We have lectures in different subjects. As a rule we have three or four classes a day. Sometimes it’s very difficult to wait till they end.

Usually I don’t miss my classes because I want to pass my exams successfully. But sometimes I do, especially when the weather is fine and classes are boring.

At 10.50 we have a big break. It lasts for 25 minutes. That’s my favourite time! That’s the time to share the latest news and to gossip. My friends and I prefer not to go to the canteen and we often have lunch in a small café not too far from the institute. During the working day we also have several short breaks that last for ten minutes.

Occasionally I have to stay at the institute till 4 or even 5 o’clock in the evening because I go to the library to get ready for my practical classes or to write a report. As a rule I have no free time on weekdays. So by the end of the week I get very tired.

When we come home in the evening, we have supper together and share the news.

After supper we wash dishes, have coffee or tea and watch TV. I prefer old comedies and my roommate likes soap- operas or films about travelling. Sometimes we go for a walk or visit our friends. At about eleven at night I go to bed. I like to read something or listen to music before going to bed. Sometimes I fall asleep while I am reading

1.Answer the following questions:

  1.  Do you get up early?

  5.  Do you prefer a cold or hot shower in the morning?
  6.  How long does it take you to get dressed?
  7.  What do you usually have for breakfast?

TEXT                                              SHOPS

We do shopping very often. Sometimes it depends on the sum of money. But our clever housewives know how to economize on scarce resources.

Artyoma Street is one of the biggest and most popular shopping centres in Donetsk. Its nice shops and department stores attract people from all over the city and from the region as well.

Shops are open every day till 6 or 8 o’ clock. If you can’t go shopping during the day you can do it in the shops which work at night.

There are different kinds of shops in Artyoma Street. There are clothes shops and shoe shops, book shops and self-service stores. But many people prefer a department store as it offers everything in one building.

Belyi Lebed is the largest department store in Artyoma Street. It has a lot of departments. The goods are rather expensive in it, but they are of excellent quality.

There are always crowds of people there, that’s why we do our shopping in the store which is not far from our block of flats. There are fewer people there and there is a wide variety of goods in stock too. There are various departments in this store. They are a readymade clothes department, perfumery, haberdashery, footwear, drapery, souvenirs and children’s goods.

Last Saturday I decided to buy a suit, and I wanted anybody to have a look at it, but unfortunately I had to go to the fitting room alone. Luckily there was a mirror! So I tried the suit on, and it was too large for me and it wasn’t fashionable enough. That is why I decided to try on a suit of another style a size smaller. It was just the thing! It fitted me fine! I found it great! And I bought it! Then I bought a cotton shirt and a tie to match the suit.

But on Sunday my wife dragged me to this shop again. She wanted me to buy a woollen skirt and an umbrella for her. Besides, she tried on a pair of shoes. The shoes were not too expensive and looked great. Unfortunately, they pinched a little, so she asked for another pair a size larger. Then we bought a raincoat which fitted my wife perfectly and was very much in the latest style. I also wanted to buy a shirt but the one I liked very much was too loud for me in my wife’s opinion. I was at a loss which shirt to take then.

Next Saturday is my wife’s birthday. I think I’ll buy some piece of jewelry for her.

   TEXT                                 SHOPPING

It’s Saturday today, and we are going to do the shopping this morning. We may do it in the grocery on the ground floor of our block of flats but we prefer to do it in the big supermarket in Zelyonaya Street. There is always a good choice of foodstuffs there.

Here is this supermarket. The first counter on the right is the bakery. There is always fresh bread, buns and rolls there. Next to this is the delicatessen and sausage counter, where one can buy different kinds of sausage, ham and salted pork. They sell milk, cream, cottage and hard cheese, butter and other diary produce at the dairy counter. Then comes fruit and vegetables counter, the meat counter, the fish counter, the dry grocery in which one can buy various cereals, spices, tea, coffee and oil. The confectionary is the cafeteria, where one may have a cup of coffee, a glass of juice with pies or cakes. They sell sweets, candies and bars of chocolate there too.

Now we are choosing some apples and lemons. Yesterday in our greengrocer’s we bought oranges and grapefruits. We are not going to buy any meat in this shop, because last Friday we bought some pork in the butcher’s. I think, later we’ll buy potatoes and onions, because our bags are heavy enough already. Next time I am going to buy herring and smoked fish.

You see, there is always a wide selection of foodstuffs in our supermarket. By the by, two minutes ago I met my neighbour there. He carried a kilo of sausage, a package of rice, a bottle of oil, a jar of cream, a packet of sugar and a loaf of bread in his bag. He waited for his wife. She forgot to buy some poultry.

1.Answer the following questions:

  1.  How much money a week do you spend on foodstuffs?
  2.  When did you go shopping last?
  3.  What are you going to buy in the shop today?
  4.  Will you go shopping tomorrow? What are you going to buy tomorrow?
  5.  What foodstuffs will you buy if you have much money?

   2. Write down no less than 10 sentences about  your shopping.
