Extreme environment (be able to talk about any extreme environment)

Tornadoes, droughts, earthquakes, hurricane, tsunamis, volcanoes.

Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. Tornadoes can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in seconds. Tornadoes appear when warm and cool air come into contact, causing a rotating wall cloud to form. A tornado appears as a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground.  Safe places in case of tornado are basements or any underground spaces.

Tornado Watch - tornadoes are possible. Remain alert for approaching storms. Tornado Warning - a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Take shelter immediately.

Alternative sources of energy (be able to talk about any source of energy)

Fossil fuels, wind energy, solar energy, wave energy, nuclear energy.

Wind Power

Wind energy harnesses the power of the wind to propel the blades of wind turbines. The rotation of turbine blades is converted into electrical current by means of an electrical generator.

Pros: wind power produces no pollution that can damage the environment; since wind generation is a renewable source of energy, we will never run out of it.

Cons: consistent wind is needed for continuous power generation. If wind speed decreases, less electricity is generated; large wind farms can have a negative effect on the scenery.

Solar Power

Solar power works by trapping the sun's rays into solar cells where this sunlight is then converted into electricity.

Pros:  renewable resource (as long as the Sun exists, its energy will reach Earth); solar power generation releases no water or air pollution;

Cons: solar power does not produce energy if the sun is not shining, nighttime and cloudy days seriously limit the amount of energy produced; solar power stations can be very expensive to build.
