Zhytomyr is a historic city in the northwestern part of Ukraine. It is the administrative centre of Zhytomyr Oblast (province), as well as the administrative centre of surrounding Zhytomyr Rayon (district). The city of Zhytomyr is not a part of Zhytomyr district: the city itself is designated as a separate district within the province. Moreover, Zhytomyr consists of two so-called "districts in a city": the Bohunsky rayon and the Korolyovsky rayon (named in honour of Serhiy Korolyov). Тhе population is 277,900 people (as of 2005). Zhytomyr is a major transport hub.
Today it links Warsaw with Kyiv, Minsk with Izmail and several major cities of Ukraine. Important economic activities of Zhytomyr include lumber milling, food processing, granite quarrying, metalworking, and musical instruments manufacturing. Zhytomyr province is the main center of Polish minority in Ukraine. Zhytomyr lies in a unique natural setting. The city is surrounded by ancient forests through which flow the Teteriv, Kamyanka, Yaroshenka and Putiatynka rivers. The Teteriv river bounds Zhytomyr in the south (however, the city territory extends onto the southern bank of the river). The city is rich in parks and pub is squares. The historical centre of Zhytomyr is located in the southern part of the city. The main streets connecting Soborny Maidan with Kyivska Street (going to the northeast, to the train station and also to the main bus station of the city), Velyka Berdychivska Street, Chernichowski Street (going to beaches and a forest-type park near the river of Teteriv, аnd Peremohy Street. The most known (but not the longest) street in the central part of Zhytomyr is Mykhaylivska one (named after St. Michael's Church). The street is located about 500 m to the east of Soborny Maidan and goes from north to south connecting some points of the above mentioned Kyivska Street аnd Velyka Berdychivska one.
The most known park of Zhytomyr is the one named after Yuri Gagarin. The park is located in the south of the city, on the left (northen) bank of the Teteriv River.
