Now we are ready to start.
Dialogue A
A: Hi! I didn’t expect to see you here.
B: Are you saying I don’t like reading?
A: Sort of.
B: Yeah, I’m not a bookworm but I have to drop in here anyway. At the
moment I need a book about pirates and sea adventures.
A: Why?
B: We are planning to stage a play about Captain Blade, and I want to know
about the context. But I can’t find anything yet…
A: Why don’t you use the electronic catalogue to search by the key word?
Dialogue B
A: Look, I think I’ve already seen this. This guy is going to spoil the
navigation equipment so the ship gets lost.
B: You can’t have seen it. It’s a new film and it’s only been on for a couple of
weeks.
A: But… Look! What did I say? He’s going to the captain’s room!
B: Hush! Let the others watch it, will you?
Dialogue C
A: Well-well… What’s going on here? You look like a bunch of wild pirates,
not students of a reputed school.
B: Sorry, Miss. We are just playing pirates...
A: The game, whatever it was, is over. Take your seats.
B: But the bell hasn’t gone yet…
A: It has. You just didn’t hear anything because of this noise.
Dialogue D
A: And what’s this?
B: I don’t know. Let me see… It says it’s an ancient device people used for
navigation.
A: Like a compass?
B: Probably. But it looks strange… I can’t understand how it worked.
A: I told you we should have joined a guided tour. The guide explains
everything and you don’t have to guess what is what.
You have 20 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 20 seconds.)

задании есть одно лишнее утверждение.

Speaker A
There are many ways to learn foreign languages but the most effective is when
people do it at school. I believe languages should be taught starting from the age of
three or four. Children acquire new words and grammar patterns easily, while
playing and communicating. They can imitate sounds and they enjoy reciting
poems and singing songs even when they don’t understand the meaning of some
words.
Speaker B
Some of my friends started learning foreign languages when they started to work.
I myself took a Spanish course when our company signed several contracts with
Spanish partners. Now it’s not a problem for me to write a letter in Spanish or
make a telephone call. It’s easier and quicker to solve any problems if you are able
to communicate without interpreters.
Speaker C
Our age is the age of information, and it’s very important for people in different
businesses to be able to exchange information quickly. For scholars and
researchers it’s even more crucial than for others. If they know foreign languages,
they can read publications in magazines and on the Internet and be well-informed
about the most recent discoveries of their colleagues in other countries.
Speaker D
I know lots of people who started learning languages at a very mature age. They
say it’s fun and I agree with them. I’m taking an Italian course at the moment and I
enjoy every minute in our classroom. We play linguistic games, sing songs and
…we talk about everything. It’s like getting back to school again. Besides, I’ve got
new friends there.
Speaker E
I can’t understand why people fuss so much about foreign languages. Nowadays
they are getting even less important than they used to be. All good films and books
are translated by professional interpreters. TV broadcasts programmes in different
languages too, so you can choose your language in the language option mode. And
there are all kinds of programmes that can translate any text for you in seconds.

Now you will listen to the texts again. (Repeat.)
This is the end of the task. You now have 20 seconds to check your answers.

Now we are ready to start.
James: Hi, Kate!
Kate: James? What are you doing here?
James: I’m here for the same reason as you are I guess – I want to see the
football match. My favourite team is playing.
Kate: Oh, yes, …It just …sounded silly. I know how keen on football you are.
You’ve been playing for our school team since the second grade I guess.
James: Since the fourth. You started swimming then.
Kate: Yes, I remember. At first I joined our athletics club but I didn’t like it
and I gave it up. But swimming is great for me.
James: Right. You are lucky we have the swimming pool just in front of our
school.
Kate: Yeah, I often go there early in the morning, just before lessons.
James: Where’s your seat by the way?
Kate: Over there, in sector B. It was my friend actually who suggested
coming here. She bought the tickets and talked me into it. She said that
we’ve never watched football live and that’s not right.
James: Absolutely. You should introduce me to your friend. We seem to have
lots in common. Is she from our school?
Kate: No, she’s my neighbour. She lives next door to me. Come on, she must
be already there.
James: No-no, I was kidding. I’m here with some friends too. And then, after
the match, we are going to the cinema.
Kate: How about the essay due on Monday? Have you already completed it?
James: No. But that’s not a good reason to miss a good film. I love science
fiction and my favourite actors are in it. Fancy coming with us?
Kate: No, I don’t want to risk failing the essay. High grades are very important
for me now.
James: Because you are going to university?
Kate: Yes. I have already chosen what I want to do. I want to be a teacher of
science.
James: I thought you loved poetry and fine arts.
Kate: That’s right but I don’t see design or literature as a career. It’s a hobby,
a quality pastime.
James: I see.
Kate: Science is something more serious. And I’m really good with children. I
know how to get them interested and involved.
James: You have a younger sister, don’t you?
Kate: A sister and a brother. They are twins and they are only three. Very cute.
James: I bet you have to do babysitting quite often, don’t you?
Kate: Not very often and I enjoy it. Tomorrow is the day when Mum works
late, so they are going to be with me.
James: The game is going to start in five minutes. I promised my friends to buy
some popcorn before I get to my seat. Do you want some too?
Kate: No, thanks. Neither popcorn nor chips. I like neither of them. I’ve just
got a bar of chocolate.
James: Chocolate fits any occasion.
Kate: Do you mean if our team loses, it’ll make it a bit sweeter, and if it wins,
the victory will taste even better?
James: Exactly.
