Unit 2.1

Travel nouns:

  1.  travel (uncount.) -  the general term to describe going from one place to another

 travels - time spent travelling, especially in foreign countries and for pleasure

 *The novel is based on his travels in India.

  1.  journey - one single piece of travel: the distance covered when travelling from one place to another.    Journey can refer to a long distance or to a short regular one.

 *How long did your journey take? *How long is your journey to work? Just about 20 minutes.

 *a long and difficult journey across the mountains

  1.  trip - going to another place (often for a short period of time) and usually back again, for a purpose,  business or pleasure. Usually involves more than one single journey.

*day trip, round trip, business trip, a five-minute trip by taxi

Trip or journey?

  •  a trip usually involves you going to a place and back again; a journey is usually one-way
  •  a trip is often shorter than a journey, although it does not have to be:

*a trip to New York  *a round-the-world trip 

  •  it is often short in time, even if it is long in distance
  •  journey is more often used when the travelling takes a long time and is difficult
  •  in AmE journey is not used for short trips:

            *(BrE) What is your journey to work like?

  1.  tour /tʊə/ (of/round/around sth) - a journey made for pleasure during which several different   places/ towns/countries, etc. are visited

package tour - a holiday/vacation that is organised by a company at a fixed price and that includes the cost of travel, hotels, etc.

  1.  voyage /ˈvɔɪɪdʒ/- a long journey, not necessarily for pleasure, by sea or in space

*The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage (=first journey).

  1.  cruise /kruːz/ - a journey by sea, visiting different places, especially as a holiday/vacation

*I'd love to go on a round-the-world cruise. *a luxury cruise ship

  1.  outing - a short trip made for pleasure or education, usually with a group of people and lasting no more than a day

*The children were on a day's outing from school.

  1.  hike - a long walk in the country
  2.  camping - living in a tent on holiday/vacation

  1.  expedition - an organized journey with a particular purpose, especially to find out about a place that is not well known

   inconvenience /ˌɪnkənˈviːniəns/ - trouble or problems

  *We apologize for the delay and regret any inconvenience it may have caused.

  1.  common /ˈkɒmən/ - happening often; existing in large numbers or in many places
  2.  custom /ˈkʌstəm/ (of doing sth) - an accepted way of behaving / of doing things in a society

  1.  destination - a place to which sb/sth is going or being sent
  2.  distant - far away in space or time
  3.  documentary /ˌdɒkjuˈmentri/- a film or tv programme giving facts about sth
  4.  domestic - inside a particular country; not foreign or international

  *domestic flights (=to and from places within a country)

  1.  explore sth - to travel to/around an area/country in order to learn about it
  2.  experience (different cultures)
  3.  fascinating /ˈfæsɪneɪtɪŋ/ - extremely interesting and attractive
  4.  find oneself somewhere - to discover yourself doing sth or in a particular situation, especially when this is unexpected

 *I suddenly found myself running down the street.

  2.  set out - to leave a place and begin a journey
  3.  stop off - to make a short visit somewhere during a trip in order to do sth
  4.  stop over - to stay somewhere for a short time during a long journey

  6.  take up sth / doing sth - to start / become involved in      *He took up gardening.

  2.  advanced - having the most modern and recently developed ideas, methods, etc

  4.  available - that you can get, buy or find
  5.  award /əˈwɔːd/ - a prize such as money, etc. for sth that sb has done
  6.  at dawn /dɔːn/ - на рассвете
  7.  to be accused of doing sth – blamed for
  8.  to break sth / for sth - to stop doing sth for a short time; to interrupt sth so that it ends suddenly

    *We broke our journey in Oxford (=stopped in Oxford on the way to the place we were going to).
