Teaching ESL Students about the 12 Days of Christmas
Even though this is a popular song in North America, most immigrants have never heard of it. Here are steps to teach it to ESL students while having fun doing it. It is a good activity to present at a school’s Christmas or holiday program.
- Play the song for students. Choose an interesting style; there are many of them. Make sure it pertains to the age of your students
- Share a brief history of the song. (Don’t give too much away as you want your students to do some of this research.)
- Find different websites explaining the history and meaning of the sons. Either give your students time to get the information off the websites or print off the information for students. (There are many websites so it’s best to Google it for yourself and decide which would be best for your students’ learning styles and give them the site addresses.)
- Students can work together on their own or in pairs to read and summarize what the website says.
- Have them report to the class their findings and give their summaries to the class
- Make sure they keep track of similarities and differences in what they hear from the presentations.
- Discuss these differences as a class. Talk about why this might be.
- Play 3-4 different recordings of the song for the students.
- Have them write a comparison and contrast essay on the songs.
- Have the students choose one of the 12 days to design a visual to present.
- Give them time to create
- Either have the students sing the song themselves or play a recording and have them will show their creations as each of their days is being sung
"12 Days Of Christmas" is an old English carol (Christmas song). It was written in 1780 like a rhyme without music. The music appeared in 1909. The principal manner of the carol is a chain. The words are practically the same in every couplet.
