Teaching ESL Students about the 12 Days of Christmas
Even though this is a popular song in North America, most immigrants have never heard of it. Here are steps to teach it to ESL students while having fun doing it. It is a good activity to present at a school’s Christmas or holiday program.
"12 Days Of Christmas" is an old English carol (Christmas song). It was written in 1780 like a rhyme without music. The music appeared in 1909. The principal manner of the carol is a chain. The words are practically the same in every couplet.

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree
On the second day of Christmas, My true love gave to me, Two turtle doves, And a partridge in a pear tree.
On the third day of Christmas, My true love gave to me, Three French hens, Two turtle doves, And a partridge in a pear tree
On the fourth day of Christmas, My true love gave to me, Four calling birds, Three french hens, Two turtle doves,
