Control work N 1 for the second course on topic “ Holidays & Pastimes”

I.Read & translate the text “Easy does it” & do the exercises given after it.

RELAXING ISN’T EASY. I know - I have tried it. I can see, therefore, why Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry should want corporations to have full-time “leisure advisers”. It seems an idea worth copying. A start should be made at the very top. Captains of industry often find it hardest of all to relax. Workers at least have the excuse that they need to protect their job and pay off the mortage. Many tycoons have all the money they could ever hope to spend. So, why don’t they ease up? Some buy a luxurious yacht, a beach house, or even an island, but seldom make use these expensive leisure facilities. “I don’t have time for a holiday”, they insist. What they usually mean is that they could find the time, if pressed, but they don’t want to. Some consider themselves so indispensable that their business would collapse if they were not around to supervise every detail. Some are prisoners of their own success: they sit on so many boards of directors, and have such a heavy  schedule of appointments, that they “haven’t a moment to spare.”

But more often than not the plain truth is that they don’t know how to ease up. No-one has ever told them how to do it. You can’t be a frantic executive one day and a leisurely beachcomber the next: the contrast is too great. The bronzed young drifters who make it look simple have had years of practice.

Put a captain of industry on a beach and he tends to get bored and restless. He misses the pace, the action. Invite him to play tennis and he will probably decline, because he fears that he will look foolish - he prefers to play games in the office, where he is a proven winner. If he has a holiday home, or stays in a plush hotel, he will be on the telephone six times a day, doing what he does best. Relaxing is for wimps.

So what can a “leisure adviser” do for him - or, increasingly, her? The basic task is to change attitudes, and gradually to introduce him to various leisure activities. Some experts believe in playing what is known as the “fear card”. The executive is warned of the risk of “burnout” and told that, if he doesn’t take care of his health, the business will suffer. Does he realise what it would cost if he had to go into more than a holiday. That is the bottom line.

But I believe in a more positive approach. A good start is to persuade him that holidays are a “psychological investment”, and that it is perfectly feasible to combine business with pleasure. This has to be done step by step: the cold turkey treatment is rarely effective. They can take work with them. For a captain of industry, holidays are ideal for strategic planning. They can call the office, though the aim must be to reduce the number of calls as the holiday progresses. They can have faxes sent to them , though the staff should try to cut down on the rolls of fax paper: one should be sufficient after a while. They can be persuaded to take up golf. It is not only a pleasant (and healthy) way of going for a leisurely walk, but it can also be good for business.

Some of the biggest deals of the past decade have begun with a casual remark on the golf course, and bankers have acquired some of their most lucrative clients while blasting their way out of a bunker. It no doubt helps to explain why golf has become the favourite sport of senior executives throughout the world.

They are plenty of courses in the sun. Executive should be reminded that this is the time of the year when it becomes imperative to embark on inspection tours of overseas subsidiaries in places like Florida, Australia and Jamaica.

Once the initial leisure training period has been completed you can try to hook him on other activities which are every bit as challening as a take-over bid. He can climb mountains, ride river rapids, go scuba diving. He may well end up making a happy discovery: leisure can be fun.

I suppose it’s difficult to begin. But if you began it, you would continue relaxing.

- What do you think of the idea of a “ leisure adviser” ?

I believe that leisure advisers helps and teach how to relax and to begin it.

- How easy is it for you to relax ?

It is easy for me to begin and continue relaxing.

II. a). Choose the best alternative to complete the gaps in this story. Be careful because some of the alternatives are only slightly wrong !

Many people go on a package holiday & book it at a travel agency. But we decided to make our own travel. We sent off for dozen of brochures & read lots of guide books before we decided which resort to go to.

We all enjoy sunbathing, so we chose a place with a long sandy beach & some interesting places nearby to visit if we wanted to go on any excursions. Instead of staying in a hotel, we wanted to save money so we booked a self-catering apartment with a view of the sea & its own balcony. In the photo the place looked delightful, & the other owners sounded really nice on the phone. But imagine our dismay when we arrived there to discover that …

b). How do you think the story continued ? What did they discover? Give your own ending. Add some 5-6 sentences:

We saw dirty rooms and half-ruined balcony. There were not breakfasts and fresh fruit. But when we arrived to reception, they said about an error in computer. They changed placed and placed us in beautiful and modern room. We were so happy.

c). In these sentences three alternatives are correct & two are wrong. Choose the best three alternatives for each:

• In the summer, this little mountain village is full of day-trippers, globetrotters and  holiday-makers.

• We stay in a charming little guest house where we paid $25 a night for bed & breakfast, full board and half board.

• Some people like to be active, energetic and strenuous when they are on holiday.

• Others prefer a lazy, relaxing and restful holiday.

• Most people like to have a choice, range and variety of things to do when they’re away from home.

• We brought home a beautiful pottery vase as a gift, present and souvenir.

d). Write down five questions you could ask your friends about their holidays:

- What kind of holidays do you like?

- When do they like to spend holidays?

- How many stars of hotels do you prefer?

- What kind of sport do you play on the holidays?

- How much money do you spend for presents?

Control Work N 2 on topiс “Medicine “ for the second course.

I. Read the following text make a list of unknown words.

Being ill.

“ You don’t look your usual self this morning”, said my  wife at breakfast.

“No, I’m not feeling up to much” I said. “I don’t know what I’ve got, but I hardly slept a wink all night, and now I’ve got a splitting headache.”

“Poor old thing”, she said, feeling my forehead. “It feels as if you’ve got a bit of a temperature”.

At work I felt ghastly all morning. My head was now throbbing violently and there were moments when it felt as if the whole office was going round. At eleven o’clock I took a couple of aspirins with my coffee, they didn’t seem to do any good. By lunchtime I had to admit that I was running a temperature: I felt hot and shivery at the same time.

I called my secretary in. “Look, Pam,” I said, “I’m not feeling too well. I’m going to take the rest of the day off. You might as well do the same when you’ve finished the letters. Perhaps you would ring up Fraser and let him know.”

“Yes, of course, Mr. Garter. You do look poorly. I hope you haven’t caught this nasty flu that’s around.”

Feeling rather sorry for myself, I put on my overcoat and wrapped scarf round my neck.

When I got home I went straight to bed and my wife gave me a hot water bottle. I certainly felt better lying down.

“I’ll bring you some lunch in a minute,” said my wife.

“No, thank you,” I said. “I couldn’t eat a thing. All I want is a glass of water. Then I think I’ll sleep for a bit”

“Don’t you think I’d better call the doctor?” she said. “I shouldn’t be surprised if you’ve got this flu, like Mrs. Higgins.”

Mrs. Higgins was our daily help, and she been off work for the last few days.

Then I must have dozen off, for I woke up, sweating all over, to hear the doctor coming up the stairs. “Quite an epidemic of it” I heard him say to my wife. I sat up feeling stiff and uncomfortable; my pyjamas were sticking to me.

“Now then,” said the doctor, sitting on the edge of the bed. “Let’s have a good look at you”. He opened his bag and stuck a thermometer in my mouth. While he was waiting he took my pulse. Then he took out the thermometer and looked at it. “Just over a hundred and two,” he murmbled.

He put a stethoscope in his ears and listened to my chest. “Now the throat. Say “Ah”. Silence. “Looks a bit sore. Does it hurt when you swallow?” I nodded. “Mm. It’s flu all right. The throat’s nothing serious.” He looked for his pen. “Look here, I’m going to keep you in bed for a day or two. Keep taking plenty of aspirin to bring your temperature down, and I’ll give you some pills to help you to sleep at night. You should stay away from work for the rest of the week and take it easy. It’s much better to shake it off in one go if you can. Otherwise, if you go back to work too soon, it might drag on indefinitely.

He wrote out a prescription and handed it to my wife. As she saw him to the door I heard him say: “He’s bound to feel rotten for the next day or so, but in any case I’ll drop in again the day after tomorrow to see how he’s getting on. Keep him well covered up.”

For two days I was terribly weak. Whenever I had to get out of bed, I felt giddy and was glad to lie down again. Moreover, I couldn’t face eating anything; all I wanted was lots of drink and plenty of  sleep. I didn’t even feel like reading. Then, suddenly, I felt much better. My temperature was almost back to normal, my appetite came back, and I felt I wanted to do something useful. Now my wife had to struggle to keep me in bed. “You ‘re not to overdo it,” she said. “Flu takes it out of you more than you think.” So I spent the time propped up with lots of pillows, catching up with my reading. In fact, it was now all rather pleasant.

II. Translate the following text into Russian in a written form.

The impetus has come from tough new parking rules, backed up by hefty fines, that came into force this summer. 1. D. In order to register a car in Japan, the owner must have somewhere to park in.

II. 1. Complete the following text with words from the box. Use your dictionary to help you.

Believe me, learning to drive is a terrifying experience. A couple of weeks ago I got my provisional driving licence & had my first lesson. The thing I found difficult was that you have to concentrate on everything at once. With one hand you are expected to put the car into accelerator while your left foot is on the clutch. At the same time, the other hand has to hold on to the steering wheel & try to keep the car on  the road. To get the car to move, whether forwards or in reverse, you have to press the gear with right foot. When you want the car to come to a halt you have to take that foot off & press the brake down hard- well not too hard or your instructor disappears through the windscreen.

The first day out on the road was a disaster. When I got to the pedestrian crossing I forgot to slow down & thought I was going to run over a little old man who was trying to cross the road. Of course my instructor, who by this time was rather irritated, screamed. Later on there was a van going incredibly slowly so I started to indicate to let the car behind me know that I was going to overtake. Well, you have never seen such a fuss. A car coming the other way started to sound its horn & flash its lights. How was I to know that up ahead there was a three mile traffic jam because some car had run out of petrol & stopped the middle of the road?

My financial career.

(after St. Leacock).

When I go into a bank I Get irritated. The clerks irritate me; the wickets irritate me; the sight of the money irritates me; everything irritates me.

The moment I cross the threshold of a bank & attempt to do business there, I become an irresponsible idiot.

I knew this beforehand, but my salary had been raised to fifty dollars a month & I left that the bank was the only place for it.

So I walked in & looked timidly round at the clerks. I had an idea that  a person about to open an account must consult the manager.

I went up to a wicket marked “Accountant”. The accountant was a  tall, cool devil (1). The very sight of him irritated me.

“Can I see the manager ?” I said, & added solemnly, “alone”.

  I don’t know why I said “alone”.

“Certainly”, said the accountant, & fetched him.

The manager was a grave calm man. I held my fifty -six dollars clutched in a crumpled ball in my pocket.

“Are you the manager?” I said. God knows I didn’t doubt it.

  “Yes,” he said.

“Can I see you,” I asked, “alone?” I didn’t want to say “alone” again, but without it the thing seemed self-evident.

The manager looked at me in some alarm. He felt that I had an awful secret to reveal.

“Come in here,” he said, & led the way to a private room. He turned the key in the lock.

“We are safe from interruption here,” he said; “sit down.”

We both sat down & looked at each other. I found no voice to speak (2).

“You are one of Pinkerton’s men, I presume”, he said.

He had gathered from my mysterious manner that I was a detective. I knew what he was thinking, & it made me worse (3).

“No, not from Pinkerton’s, “ I said, seeming to suggest that I came from a rival agency.

“To tell the truth”, I went on , “I am not a detective at all. I have come to open an account, I intend to keep all my money in this bank.”

The manager looked relieved but still serious; he concluded now that I was a son of Baron Rothschild or a young Gould.

“A large account, I suppose, he said.

“Fairy large,” I whispered. “I propose to deposit fifty-six dollars now & fifty dollars a month regularly.”

The manager got up & opened the door. He called to the accountant.

“Mr. Montgomery, “ he said unkindly loud, “this gentleman is opening an account, he will deposit fifty-six dollars. Good morning.”

  I rose.

A big iron door stood open at the side of the room.

“Good morning”, I said, & stepped into the safe.

“Come out”, said the manager coldly, & showed me the other way. I went up to the accountant’s wicket & poked the ball of money at him with a quick convulsive movement. My face was very pale.

“Here,” (4) I said, “deposit it.” The tone of the words seemed to mean,

“Let us do this painful thing while the fit is on us” (5).

He took the money & gave it to another clerk. He made me write the sum on a slip & sigh my name in a book, I no longer knew what I was doing. The bank swam before my eyes.

“Is it deposited ?” I asked in a hollow, trembling voice.

“It is “, said the accountant.

“Then I want to draw a cheque.”

My idea was to draw out six dollars of it for present use. Someone gave me a cheque-book through  a wicket & someone else began telling me how to write it out.(6) The people in the bank had the impression that I was an invalid millionaire. I wrote something on the cheque & thrust it in at the clerk. He looked at it.

“What ! (7). Are you drawing it all out again?” he asked in surprise.

Then I realised that I had written fifty-six instead of six. I was too embarrassed. I had a feeling that it was impossible to explain the thing. All the clerks had stopped writing to look at me.

  “Yes, the whole thing.”

“You withdraw your money from the bank?”

  “Every cent of it”.

“Are you not going to deposit any more?” said the clerk, astonished.

  “Never”.

An idiot hope struck me that they might think something had insulted me while I was writing the cheque & that I had changed my mind. I made a poor attempt to look like a man with an awfully quick temper. The clerk prepared to pay the money.

“How will you have it?” he said.

  “What?”

  “How will you have it?’

“Oh” - I caught his meaning & answered without even trying to think - “in fifties.”

He gave me a fifty-dollar bill.

“And the six?” he asked dryly.

  “In sixes.” I said .

He gave it me & I rushed out. As the big door swung behind me I caught the echo of a roar of laughter that went up to the ceiling of the bank. Since then I bank no more. I keep my money in cash in my trousers pocket & savings in silver dollars in a sock.

CONTROL WORK N 5 on topiс “Hotel” for the second year students.

1. Read  the following text & do the exercises below.

AN EVENING IN NUEVO LEON.

(after E. Caldwell).

It was ten o’clock in the evening when we drove into Nuevo Leon. After winding through the streets for a while we found the hotel & stopped in front of the entrance. There were few persons out that late.

While we were taking some of our things from the car, the proprietor of the hotel came out bowing & smiling. He helped us with a couple of the bags & led us into the lobby.

“ It is an honour to have you come into my hotel (1),” he said, stopping in the centre of the lobby & bowing again. “I am very pleased to have you as my guests. The Reforma Hotel is honoured.”

We smiled in return. It made us feel good to be welcomed in such a manner.

The proprietor went behind the desk. Then he placed the register in front of me & handed me the pen.

“The house is yours, senor” , he said. “Have you been long in Mexico?”

We were tired & dusty & far from being in a talkative mood. It had been a hard trip across the desert & mountains from the coast. Although the distance was less than three hundred miles, it had taken us since five that morning to reach Nuevo Leon.

I scrawled my name on the register, adding “y Sra” (2) . On the next line I wrote out my wife’s maiden name in full.

The proprietor leaned over the register & looked at the two entries closely.

“The senorita?” he inquired, looking at us.

“There are only two of us,” I said, indicating my wife & myself.

He bent over the register, this time taking out his glasses & putting them on his nose. After several moments he straightened up & removed the glasses, shaking his head emphatically.

  “No, senor,” he said unsmilingly.

“Here is how it is, senor”, I spoke up. “I signed my name, & added “y Sra”, for my wife. Then on this next line I wrote out my wife’s name in full, her professional name. That was to make everything plain.”

“But where is the senorita?” he asked, unshaken (3). “I did not see her arrive here at the hotel with you.” He looked at my wife & me, counting us on two fingers of his hand. “Where is the senorita ?”

“There is no senorita”, I said quickly. “My wife & the senorita are  the one & same person”.

A broad smile lightened the proprietor’s face.

“That is wonderful !” he said, bowing to my wife.

  “What is?”

“You & the senorita are to be married ! It is wonderful !”

My wife & I leaned wearily against the desk. It was almost eleven o’clock by then & we had been up since four that morning. We were envious of all the other guests in the Reforma who had long since retired.

“Senor, let me explain,” I began. “It is a custom of us crazy Norteamericanos. When a man’s wife has a professional name, we sometimes sign both her married name & her professional name at a time like this. She may be receiving telegrams under both names.”

“No, senor”, he spoke up. “That is impossible”.

  “Why?” I asked.

  “The telegraph office is closed.”

“Never mind, then”, I said, glancing at my wife. She has dropped her head wearily on the desk. “We don’t want to receive any telegrams tonight, anyway. Just give us a room & let us go to sleep.”

The proprietor nodded his head gravely.

“It is all right now,” he said, “I misunderstood. I offer my apologies. I am very sorry. I will now give you two rooms where you may retire to sleep immediately.”

My wife raised her head from the desk.

  “One room,” she said sleepily.

“That is impossible,” he said sternly.

My wife held up her hand, showing him her wedding ring. He looked at it uncertainly.

“We have been married for only seven long, long years, senor”, she said wearily.

“My apologies, senora”, he said gravely. “I offer you my apologies time & time again.”

My wife & I walked away, relieved. After we had gone half way to the stairs we turned & discovered that the proprietor was still behind the desk. He was bent over the register with his glasses on his nose again, reading the entries I had made.

“ There has been made a serious mistake,” the proprietor said, looking at us accusingly. “Senora, your husband has not yet arrived at the hotel. When do you expect him?”

My wife & I looked at each other confusedly.

“What are talking about ?” she said, going back to the desk.

“This is my husband here, senor !”

He looked at the name written on the register once more. Then he straightened up, shaking his head sternly.

  “It is impossible”, he said.

“What in the world are we going to do ?” my wife asked, turning to me.

“I don’t know”, I told her. “I don’t know what we can do”.

While we stood there, the proprietor took two keys from the rack behind the desk & led the way to the stairs. We followed in silence, fearing to utter a word even in whisper.

When we reached the hall on the second floor, the proprietor unlocked the door & bowed my wife into the room. Before I could follow her inside he stepped into the doorway, blocking my entrance.

“No, senor,” he said, shaking his head at time.

I could see my wife looking at me over his shoulder. She was speechless.

Dropping the luggage, I went up to him.

“Let me explain once more, senor” I began, trying my best to conceal my impatience. “We are married to each other. My wife is wearing her wedding ring. We wish to enter our room & retire for the night. We are very tired. We drove all the way across the desert from the coast today”.

He turned & looked at my wife. She looked at him appealingly. He shrugged his shoulders, & stepped aside, bowing deeply.

“I must apologize for my error,” he said. “Sometimes I do not always understand the customs of the Norteamericanos. Please accept my apologies.”

He bowed backward down the hall (4) until he reached the stairway. I ran into the room, shut the door, & locked it securely before anything further could happen.

We stood at the door listening to his footsteps until we were certain he had gone down to the lobby.

It was not long before we were startled by a sudden knocking on the door. It could not be ignored after that.

“Who is it?” I shouted in the darkness.

“I am the proprietor, senor,” he said. “Please open the door immediately.”

“Don’t do it”, my wife said. “We’ ll never get any sleep tonight if we have to argue with him again”.

“But he may break down the door”, I said.

“Let him break it down,” she said wearily. “It’s his door.”

We were quiet, not making another sound. The renewed knocking the whole building. It continued unceasingly.

“We may as well find out what he wants,” I said. “We can’t sleep with that going on”.

“Don’t let him start another argument, whatever you do,” my wife said. “Tell him it is too late to argue now, but that we will argue with him in the morning after breakfast”.

  I turned on the light.

“What do you want, senor?” I asked at last.

“The door must be opened immediately,” he said raising his voice above the knocking. I got up & unlocked the door. The proprietor stood in the doorway. He did not cross the threshold.

“It is impossible !” he said excitedly.

“What is impossible ?”, I asked.

“You may not share the room with the senorita !” he said loudly.

“Oh, my goodness! (5)” my wife cried. “He started that again!”

I could hear doors opening along the hall. Everybody in the hotel had been aroused by the clamour.

“Look here!” I said crossly. “I am not sharing the room with a senorita! This is my wife!”

“It is impossible!” he said, raising his voice above mine.

“Why is it impossible?” I shouted.

“You must occupy a separate room, senor!” he commanded.

“Tomorrow you may become  married to the senorita, if she wishes to be married, & then tomorrow night you will not be required to occupy separate rooms. But tonight you must!”

I glanced towards my wife helplessly.

“What are we going to do?” I asked. “Won’t he listen to reason at all?”

I turned round and faced the proprietor, opening my mouth to speak. Before I could utter a sound he had already spoken.

“ It is impossible senor,” he said, pushing himself between me & the room.

I found myself being directed down the hall, past several persons standing sleepily in the doorways of their rooms. He opened a door & tirned on the light.

“Please accept my apologies, senor”, he said, bowing low. “It is to my deep regret. But it was impossible”.

He closed the door, quickly turning the key in the lock on the outside. After he had withdrawn it, I heard him walking briskly down the hall the stairway.

Control work N 6. Topic “ TRAVELLING “

It’s time to start thinking about holidays again. Planning lazy days in the sun, by sea, picnicking in grassy, fairy—tale forests or marvelling at the most breathtaking scenery you’ve ever seen. Or, perhaps, you want a get-away-from-it-all holiday in that little place you found last year & fell in love with.

Nowadays tourism has become a highly organized business. There are express trains, luxurious cruisers, cars & jet air—liners; all of which provide you with comfort & security. What choice to make ? What route to take? These & other problems will be discussed in this Unit.

I.Read & do the exercises given below.

Some may be fond of travelling. For me to travel is to go through a gradual state of nerve wrecking.

Once my wife & I decided to take a holiday trip. So I went to an agency to book a cabin on a ship. While I was away my wife was supposed to be packing. To my astonishment it was only half done when I returned as my wife was in doubt whether to take a trunk or just a few suitcases to carry our things in.

It was no use urging her to hurry or to be ready at a certain time because she was not the person to be hurried or ordered about. To try to speed her up was to make her excited & bad—tempered.

With only an hour to spare, the packing to do & the city to cross, I could not but be impatient, so I simply began to throw the things into the suitcases without folding them. The suitcase nearly burst, but I was willing to burst a dozen suitcases to catch the train. I knew my wife would have to iron everything again. But I thought it would teach her not to put things off to the last moment. Within 20 minutes or so we were ready to go.

I immediately found a taxi which seemed almost too good to be true & requested the driver to hurry & get us to the station in time. How the taxi—driver managed to get us to the station alive is difficult to understand because he drove at breakneck speed through the heavy traffic of the city. We got to the station, though strange to relate, quite safely to find the train still there & with a few minutes to spare. Some acquaintances were waiting on the platform to see us off, but we hardly had time to say “ hullo “ to them. We were almost the last passengers to arrive. This was no time for me to be genteel. Up went the mountain of luggage; down sank my wife in a corner, & away went the train.

In the compartment we were not the only ones to want to put our luggage on the racks. Our fellow passengers wanted to put theirs as well, only to find there had been no room left to speak of. It was enough to make anyone angry. When they tried to dump their suitcases in the corridor, the conductor would not have them do it. They tried to convince him that it was nothing to make a fuss about but he replied that corridors were to walk through, not to store luggage in . In the end the conductor calmed down. But the people were just bursting to tell us a thing or two.

When we had to change station to go aboard the ship, my wife wanted me to carry all the luggage. She  didn’t want to waste money on porters when she had a strong, muscular husband to do it for her. But I had no desire to take the risk of breaking my back & so I went on strike. In the end  my wife gave in.

It took the porter three trips to transfer it all & when he had finished he had no breath left to speak of & the beauty of it was that she had us drag all that luggage only to leave half of it unopened when we did get there.

Travelling by Train in Britain.

One of the first things a foreigner notices about British railways is the platforms. They are higher than in most parts of the world. The platform is almost on a level with the floor of the carriages. You do not, therefore, have to climb up into a railway carriage in Britain. This makes it a little easier to get in & out of the carriage with your luggage.

The trains that go to & from London are very crowded at the times when people are travelling to work each day. There are cheap tickets after a certain time of the day, usually about 9.30  when everyone has gone to work. These are called cheap day return tickets. It is often nearly 50 % ( fifty per cent) cheaper to travel to London after 9.30 than before this time.

On many fast trains to London there is a dining - car in which you can buy lunch, dinner or coffee. On others there is a buffet at which it is possible to buy snacks & drinks. Sometimes a waiter from the dining - car brings round cups of coffee to the passengers.

There are only two classes in Britain—first & second. A first—class ticket costs 50 % more than a second—class ticket. On long iourneys there is a ticket inspector, who visits every passenger to see if he has the right ticket & is not travelling in the wrong class.

In England train passengers seldom converse with their fellow—travellers even on a long journey—this is more a national custom than a matter of etiquette.

When the passenger reaches the end of his journey & leaves the train, he has to give his ticket to the ticket collector at the exit before he can leave the station. If he has luggage & wants someone to carry it for him to a waiting car or taxi, he must ask a porter. The porter does not make a charge for his service, but he expects a tip.

1. When are the cheapest tickets for trains?

2. Where can you buy lunch, breakfast?

3. How many classes are in Britain?

4. What the passenger has to do after leaving the train?

3. You agree, don’t you , that railway is a very popular means of communication. Nevertheless many of us prefer, sometimes have, to apply to air service or travel by sea. Read the text & ask your own questions.

Last Wednesday I went down to Southampton Docks to see my partner off to New York on one of our largest liners. What colossal ships these cruisers are when you see them from the landing—stage along the quay. I had a pass, so I went on board & had a look round. From the top deck I could see the huge cranes lifting the cargo & depositing it in the hold. I saw members of the crew carrying out their duties in various parts of the ship while the captain watched the operations & gave his orders from the bridge. Then the siren sounded & the visitors made for the gangways. Finally the ship began to move off, & the passengers, leaning over the rails, waved good—bye to their friends standing below amongst the crowd. Slowly she left the harbour, passing beyond the pier, & gradually disappeared in the distance.

A few days later I myself had to go to Paris. The journey was urgent & I went by air. A special bus provide by the company took us to the airport. On the airfield we saw a large plane waiting for us.We climbed into it, & at exactly twelve o’clock it took off. Very soon our “ magic carpet “ reached the sea, & shortly afterwards we saw the French coast. It wasn’t long before we arrived at our destination. Our pilot made a perfect landing & we got our of the plane.
