1. Read the text from the words: “The Mouse smiled at David and murmured, "Free period. We’d better go out of hearing" to the words: "Specially for him, they said, as if to atone for something emasculating in the situation, something unfair. He was touched".

2. Answer the following questions:

  1.  What did David and the girls do while Breasley was having his siesta?
  2.  How did the Mouse find herself at Henry’s place?
  3.  Did the Mouse feel sorry that she had given up studying in the RCA?
  4.  How did Anne come to Coetminais?
  5.  What new details about Henry Breasley did David know from the girls?
  6.  What else happened at the picnic and on the way home?

3. Give a summary of the given part.

4. Read the text of the given part again.  As you read, a) find the following words and phrases used in the text, translate them; b) be ready to say what contexts they are used in; c) use them in the sentences of your own:

6. As you read, a) find out in what context the word "convention" is used. Write out the dictionary meaning of the word; b) find passages in the text proving that David wasn't devoid of conventions; c) think of the answer to the question why David had a feeling that he was taking a kind of a test on the picnic; d) pick out new traits of the main characters that we come to know from the given part; g) think of the means proving that the author likes the Freak.

  1.  Summarize your observations and answer the following questions making use of your notes:

  1.  Recall the story of Diana's coming to Coetminais. Do you find the explanations of her staying with the old man a bit fragmentary? Give your own reasons.
  2.  In what context is the word "convention" used? What is the meaning of it? What was Breasley's attitude to conventions?
  3.  Do you find the relations between Henry and the girls conventional? Why? What was David's opinion on this point? Is it good or bad to be ashamed of one's conventions?
  4.  Draw a parallel between the Mouse and the Freak. What is different in them from David's point of view?
  5.   Does the author sympathize with the Freak? Prove it.
  6.  Comment on Diana's words about Henry: "The more reasonable you are, the less he hears."
  7.  What favour did the Freak ask David of? How did she explain her request?
  8.  Consult your notes and name the symbols that grasp your attention while you are reading the episode of the picnic. What is their significance? What atmosphere do they create?
