Massive Attack are an English musical group from Bristol consisting of Robert "3D" Del Naja and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, formed in 1988 (also with Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles who left Massive Attack in late 1999). The duo are considered to be the inventors of the trip-hop genre. Their debut album Blue Lines was released in 1991, with the single "Unfinished Sympathy" reaching the charts and later being voted the 10th greatest song of all time by The Guardian. 1998's Mezzanine, containing "Teardrop", and 2003's 100th Window charted in the UK at number 1. Both Blue Lines and Mezzanine feature in Rolling Stones list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. You can hear their songs in lots of TV shows and films, for example “The Jackal”, “Batman forever, “Moulin Rouge!”, “House, M.D.”, “Matrix”, “Pi”, “Misfits” etc.
Massive Attack started in 1988, with the independently released song, "Any Love", sung by Carlton McCarthy. Then on 8 April 1991 they released their debut album Blue Lines wich marked the birth of the musical style trip-hop and term “Bristol sound”. It brought Massive Attack the reputation of one of the most innovative British bands of the early nineties. The single “Unfinished Sympathy” is still very popular and is regularly played on the radio and television. In 2003 the album was ranked 395 among the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by the magazine Rolling Stone.
Album «Blue Lines» and the first few singles groups exist in two variants cover design: one under the group name «Massive Attack», the second under the group name «Massive». This was done in order not to cause undesirable associations with "Operation Desert Storm" and military actions in the Persian Gulf, which took place simultaneously with the «Blue Lines».
Protection is the second album of the band. In their new album they tried to change the sound, mood and content much, so those who expected to continue «Blue Lines» were disappointed. The new album was much slower than the previous one, contained less ready samples and more live sound. However it attracted a wide audience and it is the second and last Massive Attack album listed in the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die”. DJ Mad Professor remixed the album in 1995 under the name No Protection.
The third studio album of Massive Attack is Mezzanine, released on 20 April 1998 by Virgin Records. Musically, Mezzanine is a major departure from the jazzy and laidback sound of the first two albums. The album's textured and deep tone relies heavily on abstract and ambient sounds. Mezzanine marked the parting of band member Andrew Vowles, due to creative conflicts. The album is the band's most commercially successful to date. Upon release it went to the number one spot in the UK, Australian, Irish and New Zealand album charts. And it contains one of the most famous singe “Teardrop”, the “House, M.D.” OST.
Released in February 2003, 100th Window was written and produced by Del Naja and Neil Davidge, and features vocals from Horace Andy, Sinéad O'Connor and Damon Albarn (performing as 2D). It is the first album by the band that made no use of samples, and contains none of the jazz or jazz fusion stylings of the Blue Lines or Protection recordings. Sound became slow, juicy and deep. 100th Window was a great financial success. Also then Massive Attack astonished their listeners by broadcasting a variety of information from weather to anti-war slogans on a big screen during their performances.
In early 2006, Massive Attack decided to release a greatest hits album - «Collected» - and, as a complement to it, DVD with all the clips and groups previously unreleased material. And finally seven years after the release of their previous non-soundtrack, standalone studio album, 100th Window, they released their fifth regular studio album Heligoland. The album release was preceded on 4 October 2009 by an EP, Splitting the Atom. For now it’s the last album of Massive Attack and who knows, how much it will take them to create the new, unique masterpiece.
Robert Del Naja is also graffiti master. Astonishingly for a visual artist, Del Naja is colour blind. In a 2010 interview, he said "Painting is difficult for me because I'm colour blind. Back in the day, I had to label my spray cans with what colour they were because I couldn't tell ... It's like the emperor's new clothes: [people] telling me it's great, and me pretending that's what I intended."
