1) The event happened on the 6th of February
2) I went to the hospital to check if my insomnia is serious.
3) I was at the Western Hospital near Dundass and I was waiting for the doctor. While waiting there I was listening to a conversation of a man with the doctor, who was saying that his nightmares are caused by a trauma that he got in the near past. I know that spying is not good at all, but I was very curious about this case. The guy told him that a few months ago he saw his girlfriend cheating on him. I know, for me it also sounded like a soap opera, but it is true! But that is not the point, it was very easy to understand because the doctor was speaking very slow and clear to make the patient to calm down.
4) I realized that the most important thing in the dialogue is to understand the context and to know the background information. You also have to understand which question the other person is answering, so you have to know how to make this parallel between both speeches. I have never noticed it before, so it was a good and interesting way to learn this type of listening skill.
1) The event was on the 1st of February.
2) It was my Birthday party.
3) It was actually the best Birthday party I have ever had. I was so happy to see so many people and everyone was celebrating me. And actually it was also a good, funny and enjoyable way where you unconsciously practice both listening and speaking skills. There were over than 40 people and most of them wee Canadians, so they were also celebrating me and everyone was saying different words to me and I had to understand them to respond. It wasnt difficult, but it still a good way to practice your listening and speaking skills with native people.
4) I hope that there will be changes in my English in one year. I am a bit afraid of the 4 months of vacation, where I am actually not going to speak English, so I would try to keep my English in the same level or even better.
1) The event was on the 24th of January.
2) I was listening to our History lectures online.
3) I didnt attend one History lecture so I had to write the notes for that day. Ms. Guerson is a great professor; so, as usual, it was really easy to understand her speech. There were not any problems. It is a very good way to practice your listening skills, because you also have to write as much as possible, you are also practicing note-taking skills.
4) Taking notes, while listening to something is really useful, because that is what is going to be in the next year and our teachers are trying to teach us how to do it better. Going to lectures or listening to them at home is a good way to prepare yourself for the real academic world.
1) The event was on the 19th of January.
2) I was watching the American TV-show “White Collar”
3) I started watching the 3 season of this TV-show, but it wasnt translated in Russian, so I had to watch it in English. It wasnt very difficult, because I had subtitles, but I was really trying not to look at them, because I prefer to watch people acting, to see their hand gestures and sometimes it helps to understand their conversation, also face expressions. Sometimes it was difficult to understand the joke lines in this TV-show, so I had to follow the subtitles in these moments, because most of jokes are made for American people, so you have to have some background knowledge of current events to understand them.
4) I would try to watch one episode in English, without the subtitles, so it would help me to practice my listening skills even more, no matter how hard it is. As it is said “Only practice makes perfect”, so I would try to do that.
1) The event happened on the 18th of January.
2) Yesterday was an all-ages party at Rich club and I would like to speak to this, because for me it was really challenging. Just imagine, you are trying to understand someone when the music is so hard, that you cant even listen your thoughts.
3) While dancing or sitting with someone you want to communicate with each other, because it is a bit awkward just to sit and stare at people. So you are trying to speak and the opponent doesnt understand you and you just here a very loud “WHAT?” from the person. After that she says something and you also dont understand anything. But when miracle happens and you here the person you could have a short conversation, so here is when you practice your listening skills, because of the noise it is very challenging.
4) You have to understand that you have to be prepared to speak to people and listen to them when it is noisy and it is a good way to practice your listening skills. You should try it, because for me it was a completely new experience.
1) The event happened on the 9th of January.
2) As I have said, for me it is more useful to practice my listening skills in a real conversation. So I and my friends went to a sushi bar, where I have met a British guy, with a very strong accent from south Manchester. I had a very long and interesting conversation with him about England, about their political system, relations with Ireland etc.
3) Sometimes it was hard to understand him because of his accent, but if I had problems in understanding, I asked him to repeat it again slowly, or sometimes asked my other British friend to translate it into Russian.
4) I have realized that social life is the best way to practice your listening and of course speaking skills. Where you have to understand the speakers ideas and express your own ones. I also noticed that accent like British, Scottish or Australian confuse me, so I think I should listen more to this speech.
On the 6 of January I was flying back to Canada. So the whole flight was a good listening practice for me. And I have realized what is difficult for me in the English language. When people are talking to me sometimes I cant understand them, so I am getting very nervous. For example I was passing the border in Canada and the policeman started to speak with me asking a lot of questions at the same time and when it happens I am getting very nervous and sometimes I cant understand the speech properly. So I have to ask again and when I do it I think that I am bothering the person even more, so I am becoming even more nervous. I have to practice more my listening skills, but not on computer, I have to do it with people in a real conversation, it will definitely help me.
During this term I became very interested in TED talks. I didnt know that they were also popular in Moscow. There they are translated, but I still prefer to watch them in English. So on the first of January, right after the New Year, we started to argue with my Mom about the Bible, so to prove my point of view I showed her a TED talk “My year of living Biblically”. A man is telling his experience of living a year following every single rule in the Bible. It was very interesting to hear all these awkward moments that this man had to pass because of his project. As usual it was very easy to understand. I have realized that I dont have many problems in listening. Of course my listening skills are not perfect, but every time when I need to understand something I can do it easily.
On the 15 of December I was at the restaurant with my father and with the representatives of different political parties of Nepali government. They all speak English fluently so it was a great opportunity for me to speak about politics with these great people. Sometimes it was difficult to understand some specific terms, but if I had this problem, I asked for the definition because I didnt want to miss a thing. It was really interesting to hear different positions of the possibilities of controlling the government at the same time, because we all were at the same room. It was really interesting and useful.
On the 24th of November I was at the birthday party of my friend. He is Canadian, so most of his friends are native speakers. I thought it would be difficult for me to understand them and to communicate with each other, because my English is not so good, but finally it wasnt a problem for me. I was feeling very happy and proud of my English, when I was making some jokes in English and everyone was laughing. At the same time sometimes it is difficult to understand some sarcastic sentences, but it wasnt a big problem for me. Actually, I think that communicating with your friends in the bar, or somewhere else is also a great listening and definitely speaking practice, because you have to understand what they are speaking and at the same time you have to respond them something related with the topic. But when it gets difficult for me to understand them I always have one phrase that saves me from every situation: “English is not my first language”. Right now this sentence became sort of a joke, so we are just laughing when I say these words.
