Данные методические указания предназначены для студентов-заочников первого года обучения (I семестр) по направлению «Экономика». Методические указания определяют основные направления самостоятельной работы студентов. Контрольные задания позволяют развить у студентов навыки и умения использования английской грамматики, чтения и перевода научно-популярной литературы на английском языке.

Методические указания содержат требования к зачёту, рекомендации по выбору варианта и оформлению контрольной работы №1.

Выполнение контрольных заданий

1. Контрольные задания составлены в трёх вариантах. Номер варианта следует выбирать в соответствии с последней цифрой в номере зачётной книжки студента.

2. Выполнять письменные контрольные работы следует в отдельной тетради. На обложке тетради пишутся все необходимые реквизиты (стандарт деканата Заочного факультета ДГТУ).

3. На первой странице тетради пишется номер контрольной работы и номер выполняемого варианта.

4. Контрольные работы должны выполняться чётко, аккуратно. При выполнении работы необходимо оставлять в тетради широкие поля для замечаний, объяснений и методических указаний преподавателя (рецензента).

5. Задания должны быть выполнены в той последовательности, в которой они даны в контрольной работе.

6. Выполненные контрольные работы необходимо отправлять для проверки и рецензирования в вуз в установленные сроки.

7. Если контрольная работа выполнена без соблюдения указаний или не полностью, то она возвращается без проверки.

Исправление работы на основе рецензий

После получения проверенной контрольной работы следует внимательно прочитать рецензию, ознакомиться с замечаниями и проанализировать отмеченные ошибки.

Руководствуясь указаниями рецензента, нужно ещё раз проработать учебный материал. Все предложения, в которых были обнаружены орфографические и грамматические ошибки либо неточности перевода, следует переписать начисто и поместить в конце данной контрольной работы.

Отрецензированные и исправленные контрольные работы – это учебные документы, и их необходимо сдавать на кафедру. В дальнейшем выполненные студентами контрольные работы хранятся в Архиве ДГТУ.

Содержание зачёта

1. Проверка умения читать вслух и переводить со словарём текст.

2. Проверка понимания вопросов преподавателя по содержанию текста.

3. Умение строить монологическое высказывание по изученным темам.

The Statue of Liberty

1. One of the most famous statues in the world stands on an island in New York Harbor. This statue is, of course, the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is a woman who holds a torch up high. She symbolizes a welcome to a land of freedom. Visitors can go inside the statue. The statue is so large that as many as twelve people can stand inside the torch. Many more people can stand in other parts of the statue. The statue weighs 225 tons and is 301 feet tall.

2. The Statue of Liberty was put in 1886. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France. Over the years France and the United States had a special relationship. In 1776 France helped the American colonies gain independence from England. The French wanted to do something special for the U.S. centennial, its 100th birthday.

2. Laboulaye was a well-known Frenchman who admired the U.S. One night at a dinner in his house, Laboulaye talked about the idea of a gift. Among guests was the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Bartholdi thought of a statue of liberty. He offered to design the statue.

2. Many people contributed in some way. The French people gave money for the statue. Americans designed and built the pedestal for the statue to stand on. The American people raised money to pay for the pedestal. The French engineer Alexander Eiffel, who was famous for his Eiffel Tower in Paris, figured out how to make the heavy statue stand.

After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he understood its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made considerable contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first award ceremony.

Nobel’s original sum of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for awards which vary from $30,000 to $125,000.

Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma, and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges’ decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes. No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some people have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes.

We can stay young forever. Dr Shen Ziyin, the Chinese doctor, says that he (1) … the answer to the problem of ageing. His idea is a herbal medicine to slow the process of ageing.

The Bald Eagle

1. In 1782, soon after the United States won its independence, the bald eagle was chosen as the national bird of the new country. American leaders wanted the eagle to be a symbol of their country because it is a bird of strength and courage. They chose the bald eagle because it was found all over North America.

2. Today, the bald eagle has almost disappeared from the country. In 1972 there were only 3,000 bald eagles in the entire United States. The reason for the bird’s decreasing population is pollution, especially pollution of the rivers by pesticides. Pesticides are chemicals used to kill insects and other animals that attack and destroy crops. Unfortunately, rain often washes pesticides into rivers. Pesticides pollute the rivers and poison the fish. Eagles eat these fish and then the eggs eagles lay are not healthy. The eggs have very thin shells and do not hatch. Because many of the eggs did not hatch and produce more eagles, the number of eagles quickly became smaller.

3. Today, the American government and the American people are trying to protect the bald eagle. The number of bald eagles is slowly increasing. It now appears that the American national bird will survive.

The invention of the phonograph happened quite by accident. Thomas Edison moved to Menlo Park, New Jersey, in 1876, where he established an industrial research laboratory. There Edison worked on a carbon telephone transmitter (угольный микрофон) to improve the existing Bell system. In that laboratory a year later Edison invented the phonograph while trying to improve a telegraph repeater. He attached a telephone diaphragm to the needle in the telegraph repeater to produce a recording that could be played back. After some improvements to the machine, he recorded the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and played the recognizable reproduction of his voice back to an astonished audience.

So he invented the machine that could “write sounds”. That was the first gramophone. He also made a machine that showed moving pictures: it was a kind of a box with a hole in front. When one looked into the hole and turned the wheel, he could see “a film”, but the film lasted only for about twenty seconds, and only one man at a time could see it. Of course, those were not the moving we see all over the world today, but Edison is famous for this invention as well as for many others.

Bronco McLoughlin – twentieth-century cowboy

Bronco McLoughlin was born and brought up in Ireland. At the age of sixteen he left and went to live in Australia. “When I was a boy, I always wanted to be a cowboy. In Australia I got a job on a cattle ranch, and that’s where I learned to ride. I became a good rider and a few years later I started taking part in rodeos-riding wild horses in competitions. It was in Australia that I really learned about horses – how to look after them, and how to train them to do what you want them to do”.

In 1966, after twelve years in Australia, Bronco went home to Ireland to his father. By chance a film company was making a film near his home. The film was called “Viking Queen” and they wanted a good rider to be an extra. Bronco got the job and after that, with the contacts that he made in the film, he got another one … and then another one. Stunts became his life. There is something about the English Channel that has always fascinated the human race and it has always played a special role in British history. The sea itself has always been important to mankind but the Channel often created a barrier between Great Britain and the Continent. This barrier has existed for more than 12,000 years and the desire to break it has occupied the minds of many people for almost two hundred years.

The construction of the tunnel is perhaps the most incredible engineering project of the 20th century. In fact its completion was called a “Technical triumph”.

However, the first proposal to build a Channel Tunnel appeared in 1802, when a French engineer presented his project for two tunnels to cross it. Historians say Napoleon was interested in that plan. But Napoleon was more interested in fighting the British than in linking the two countries, and shortly afterwards a new war between England and France began. There were many other plans to build a tunnel but unfortunately all of them failed. It was not until after the last war that Britain and France began seriously considering the project. On the 12th February, 1986, Mrs. Thatcher and President Mitterand signed the Franco-British Treaty which allowed the construction and the operation of the Channel Tunnel. The tunnel was completed eight years later.

It is now very quick and easy to cross the Channel. You don’t have to book a ticket. The Channel Tunnel trains operate twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. You can now cross the Channel in thirty-five minutes. At last the great barrier has been broken.
