The Economic Faculty
The Faculty Of Economy is a pretty young one in the Saint Petersburg University, The foundation of the present Faculty Of Economy is connected with the name of a well-known Soviet economic professor, A.A. Voznesensky, who became the first dean of the Faculty and under whose guidance the faculty was organized in 1939 and today occupies a large four (and in some places six) stories building in the very end of Tchaikovsky street. It's of interest that this building used to be the summer residence of an outstanding political figure of Alexander I lime M.M, Spiransky.
Now the faculty provides experts of the following seven specialties: research and development economics, international economic relations, economics in tourism, management and entrepreneurship, accounting, theoretical economics and economic cybernetics, the department of which was founded in 1958 by the Nobel Prize winner academician L.V, Kantorovitch, professors V.V.Novozhilov and S.I. The faculty curriculum requires five years of studying, and the schedule is rather tense.
Usually students have three to five classes every day, so lectures and classes start at 9 in the morning and last till 3-6 p.m.
The curriculum is drawn up in such a way as to run different general courses (the history of
Russia, a foreign language, international culture, philosophy, economics, Russian and foreign economic history, management, statistics and application of mathematical methods in economics etc.) and a number of special subjects (as mathematical analysis, linear programming, theory of probabilities, analytical geometry, simulation and others). Besides compulsory subjects there are some optional subjects and a number of specialized courses and seminars which students can attend at their will and which enable them to qualify in their future specialty.
Any types of students independent research work are greatly welcomed, or they can take part in a research carried out in the laboratories of the faculty, and students participate in scientific annual conferences. There also exists a students' research society.
The number of students currently is about 1500. During their fourth year the students specialize in more narrow field and are distributed to different chairs headed by experienced scientists, who contributed to development of economics. Among them we can name professors Kozlov, Peshekhonov, Moiseyenko, Markin and others.
During their fifth year students (and some of them even earlier) are assigned for probation to different companies or banks to get acquainted better with their future work. The Economic Faculty also has a program that provides an education for those students who have already obtained a college degree in another discipline and who are currently engaged in business. This department (named the Special Economic Faculty) has approximately 600 students enrolled. Three specialties are offered in this program: Entrepreneurship, International Economic Relations and Accounting.
They say that the graduates of the Economic Faculty don't have problems with getting hired,
most of them have job offers even before their state exams and the defending of diploma thesis.
