How to agree:

With positive statements

I think so too. (so = whatever was stated)

So do I. (so = too/also)

Me too.

I do too.

I agree. / I concur.

NOTEso stands before do / too stands after do and there must be a verb (exception = “me too”)

NOTE also that the word so has different meanings in the above examples.

How to agree:

With negative statements

Neither do I.

Me neither.

I don’t either.

Be careful of the register = level of formality or informality):

Okay, you’ve twisted my arm. (I agree with reluctance.)

You’re a tough negotiator…

If that’s the case, I guess…

If you put it that way, I suppose…

If you look at it like that, then I suppose…

I’ll have to take your word on that.

I agree to some extent.

I suppose so.

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Against my better judgment, I’m going to trust you on this.

Alright, I’ll go along with that.

I might be coming round to your point of view.

I still have my doubts, but okay.

With reservations, I’m going to accept that.

Perhaps.

I second that. / I’ll second that.

Okay, you’ve convinced me.

You are absolutely right.

Spot on.

You’ve hit the nail on the head.

You have my full support.

I’ll back you up on that one.

That’s just what I was going to say.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

I couldn’t have said it better.

I couldn’t agree with you more.

That’s just the point I was trying to make.

Exactly.

Absolutely.

Precisely.

That’s just what I think.

I am in complete agreement.

I agree wholeheartedly.

How to disagree:

With positive statements

Say the opposite.

I think differently/the opposite.

I disagree.

I do not think so.

Or – (be careful of the register = level of formality or informality):

No tact in the following whatsoever (some are rude/impolite/disrespectful):

Are you having me on?

Over my dead body!

That’s ridiculous!

There is no way on earth…

That sounds like sheer/utter lunacy/madness.

Are you out of your mind?

Have you got a screw loose?

You’ve got bats in the belfry!

You’re having a laugh, aren’t you?

You can’t be serious?

That’s out of the question.

Yer, right! = (intonation is very important here and it means I don’t believe you at all.)

You’ve got to be kidding!

Are you kidding?

Are you pulling my leg?

Go on! Pull the other one!

That’s complete nonsense.

I’ve never heard such utter rubbish (twaddle).

You must be joking!

That is so not true. = That is so untrue.

That’s a lie.

You’re lying.

Absolutely not.

No way!

………………………………………….

We don’t seem to see eye to eye on this one.

Let’s agree to disagree!

Under no circumstances (will I)…

That is simply not true.

I can’t see any possible reason why…

I find that very difficult to accept/ believe.

I totally disagree.

There is no way I can accept that.

That is totally out of the question.

That’s impossible.

I’ll leave this in the hands of the experts.

I’m going to sit on the fence on this one.

I shall remain neutral on this.

I really couldn’t say one way or the other.

I’m willing to leave the decision entirely up to you.

As I don’t really have all the information, I’ll leave this one up to you.

I have no view on this at all.

That doesn’t tally with the information I have.

I can’t go along with that.

I thought we’d already decided…

But (last week) didn’t you say…?

I wouldn’t say that myself.

That’s not right.

MIDDLE GROUND

Tactful ways of disagreeing:

I’d go along with that up to a point, but…

I’m going to need some persuading.

I’m not following your logic there.

I agree up to a point, but…

You could say that, but…

Have you also thought about…?

I think you might be forgetting…

I can see how you might think that, but…

Do you really think that’s such a good idea?

I wouldn’t quite put it that way myself.

I wouldn’t express it quite like that myself.

We don’t seem to be in complete agreement here.

I don’t not xxx…., but…

It’s not that I totally disagree with…., but…

NOTE – you must pay attention to:

whether the ORIGINAL sentence is positive or negative

the tense of the statement (auxiliary verb)

what is being expressed – an opinion or something else…

DIS + Vb

OPPOSITE verb

DISAGREE

(+) He disagrees with them.

AIM = You wish to agree (with him)

I agree (with him).

So do I.

I do too.

Me too.

I also disagree with them.

I disagree with them too (as well).

He is absolutely right.

That’s just what I think.

I think so too.

He has my full support.

I think he is right. They are wrong.

Bravo!

etc….

(+) He disagrees with them.

AIM = You wish to disagree (with him)

But I don’t disagree with them.

I disagree with him.

I agree with them, (not him).

I don’t agree with him.

He is wrong. They are right.

He hasn’t got a clue.

What a fool he is!

Talk about being blind!

He does not disagree with them.

Intonation, stress and context play a strong role here.

If the stress is on NOT, then this means that HE definitely agrees with them.

If the stress is on DISAGREE, then room is left for doubt and we expect a big BUT…

AGREE

(-) He does not agree with them.

AIM = You wish to agree

I also do not agree with them.

Neither do I.

Me neither.

I don’t either.

I don’t agree with them either.

I agree with him.

I think he is right. They are wrong.

etc….

(-) He does not agree with them.

AIM = You wish to disagree (with him)

But I do (agree with them).

He’s not right.

He’s wrong.

They are right.

I disagree with him.

I don’t agree with him.

I’m on their side.

He’s got it wrong. He’s mistaken (in not agreeing with them).

I think they are right.

(Stress on NOT) – means:

He (definitely) agrees with them. (This, for instance, may be part of an argument)…

(Stress on DISAGREE) – a likely meaning is:

He agrees with them, but only to a certain degree.

DISCONNECT

They disconnect their phone at night.

Agree:

I also disconnect my phone at night.

So do I.

I do too.

Me too. (informal)

I unplug my phone too.

That’s exactly what I do.

CONNECT

They do not leave their phone connected at night.

Agree:

I do the same thing.

I do not leave my phone connected at night either.

I also unplug my phone at night.

Neither do I.

I don’t either.

Me neither. (informal).

Neither do I disconnect my phone at night.

I do not disconnect my phone either.

I also do not disconnect my phone.

(These contradict the original sentence because – They actually disconnect their phone.

They disconnect their phone at night.

Disagree:

But I don’t (disconnect my phone at night).

I leave my phone plugged in at night.

I prefer to be contactable.

I do otherwise.

They do not leave their phone connected at night.

Disagree:

But I do (leave mine connected).

I leave my phone plugged in at night.

I prefer to be contactable.

I do otherwise.

That is unwise; it is better that people can contact you when in need.

I do not disconnect my phone at night.

Agree:

Neither do I.

Me neither.

I don’t either.

I also do not disconnect mine at night.

Disagree:

I always disconnect mine.

But I do.

That is unwise.

I leave my phone connected at night.

Agree:

So do I.

I do too.

Me too.

I also leave mine connected.

Disagree:

I don’t do that.

What folly!

I’d never let anything disturb my dreams.

DISLIKE

LIKE

I dislike that actor.

Agreement

So does he.

He does too/also/as well.

He also dislikes that actor.

He agrees with me.

He holds the same opinion.

I do not like that actor.

Agreement

He doesn’t either.

Neither does he.

He also doesn’t like that actor.

We see eye to eye on this.

He’s on my side.

Neither does he dislike that actor.

He does not dislike that actor either.

He also does not dislike that actor.

These mean that we both like that actor!

This is an obvious contradiction to the original sentence – “I dislike that actor”.

I do not dislike that actor.

Neither do I. (Means – I like that actor too.)

Me neither.

I don’t dislike that actor either. In fact, I think he’s rather good.

I’m no fan, I must say.

I like that actor.

So do I.

I do too.

Me too.

I think he’s brilliant.

Yes, what a dish!

They disarmed the enemy. разоружать

Agree:

So did we.

We did too.

We did likewise.

We also did that.

Disagree:

We didn’t disarm the enemy.

We left the enemy armed.

We thought the enemy should be able to defend themselves.

They did not disarm the enemy.

Agree:

Neither did we.

We didn’t either.

Disagree:

We did.

They armed the enemy. вооружать

Agree:

So did we.

We did too.

We did likewise.

We also did that.

Disagree:

We did not arm the enemy.

We would never do that.

What double standards.

What hypocrisy!

They did not arm the enemy.

Agree:

Neither did we.

We didn’t either.

Disagree:

We did.
