A new clue in the AIDS mystery EVIDENCE THAT DISEASE WAS AROUND IN THE 60S As any public- health professional knows, an epidemic is worthy of A. Conan Doyle or P. D. James. And that certainly appeared to be the case with AIDS. According to conventional wisdom, the AIDS virus started to spread in the United States around the late 70s. But recently became apparent that a 15-year old Missouri boy had probably died of the disease as early as 1969, years before anyone had detected an outbreak and even given ADDS its name.
The boy, identified only as Robert R, came to St. Leuis city Hospital suffering from swelling in his legs and genitals, to the doctors, it was clear tat something was preventing the drainage of lymphatic fluid from body. What puzzled them was the presence of a severe infection with Chlamydia. That disease, characterized by severe inflammation of mucous membranes, and usually transmitted sexually, had spread beyond the genitals to the rest of the body. Another surprise tests showed the body wasnt producing antibodies. The lack of this immune response wouldnt surprise any of todays AIDS specialists but it baffled the St. Leuis doctors.
Surgery to relieve the swelling and antibiotics to fight the infection failed. When Robert finally died, an autopsy revealed that fibrous tissue and umpurs were obstructing the lymph drainage system accounting for the swelling, but the postmortem also showed that he had Kaposi, sarcoma-at that tiean extremely rare cancer in the United States. Precisely because the doctors were at a less for an explanation, microbiologist Memery Elwin-2 Lewis and surgeon Marlys Witte took some blood and tissue samples from the body and put them in the deep freeze for further studies should questions arise.
No question arise they did, after AIDS had reached epidemic proportions. In 1984 several doctors involved in the case wrote a letter to the Journal of the American Medical Association suggesting on the basic of the symptoms that Robert was probably an early victim of AIDS.
