The scientific and technological progress of the 20ht century resulted in widespread mechanization, automated lines computerized management, spaceships, atomic power stations, pipelines, new roads and highways. But it can't be denied that the price for rapid industrial development is very high: natural resources are exhausted, the ecological balance of the planet is dis turbed (some species of flora and fauna disappear; city and industry waters, chemicals and fertilizers are endangering lakes, rivers and ponds). Big cities have problems with air pollution: the "Killer Smog" caused some 3500-4000 deaths in London in December 1952. Progress can be blamed for all these environmental problems.
In recent years the pollution problems have received great publicity. 1 he Environmental movement associated with no political party has gained widespread trust and support. Environmental activists stress that problem is caused by industrial pollution and the automobiles. Long-established environ mental groups warn that acid rains threaten many forests. The mass media began to campaign against the ugliness of billboards tin cans and trash. Many people started to realize that to keep air and water clean, strict pollution control is necessary.
Plenty of animals and birds species on the Earth are disappearing now.A lot of them are in danger. Indian Tiger and African Elephants are among them. People have hunted and killed a great number of tigers in India and a lot of elephants in Africa.
If the situation continues being so sad, then these animals have no future. People must take care of them all. We must save wild animals.
The protection of natural resources and wild life is becoming a political program in every country. Numerous antipollution acts passed in different countries led to considerable improvement in environment. In many countries purifying systems for treatment of industrial waters have been installed, measures have been taken to protect rivers and seas from oil waters. Wild life reservation models of undisturbed nature are being developed in some parts of the world.
But the environmental problems have grown beyond the concern of a sin gle country. Their solution requires the cooperation of all nations.
There are rather a lot of species of animals that may disappear from the Earth within the next few years. They will dieout and become extinct unless man can help. For some species it's already too late. The American passenger pigeon was once a very common bird. Yet it's gone forever. The last one died in a Zoo in 1914. Some animals have been saved at the very brink of their disappearance. Wild life problems occur everywhere.
