“Making your day out fun. Theme Parks”

«День отдыха. Тематические парки».

Цели урока

Создать для учащихся необходимые условия для развития иноязычной коммуникативной компетенции посредством чтения  и говорения.

Тип урока

комбинированный

Задачи урока

Практическая: активизация навыков и умений по совершенствованию в чтении, (используя разные стратегии: с частичным пониманием и с полным пониманием просчитанного)  и говорении по теме урока.

Развивающая:  развитие умения инициативного говорения и умения работать в группах, умения делать определённый выбор.

Воспитательная: способствовать развитию интеллектуального потенциала учащихся, воспитание чувства взаимной поддержки и ответственности друг за друга и умения брать ответственность на себя, формировать терпимое отношение и уважение к мнениям другого человека.

Средства обучения

ТСО: компьютер, проектор и экран; презентация Powerpoint, видеофильм.        


Lesson stage

Aim

Procedure

  1.  Lead-In (Warm-up)

To generate interest in the topic of the lesson and to personalize the topic.

The teacher asks the students about their days out and if they visit museums and galleries.

  1.  Pre-Reading
  •  To clarify the meaning and pronunciation of the words of the topic,
  •   to extend students’ vocabulary and to check their home task.

  1.  The teacher asks the Ss to match the words and the pictures, then to explain the words (visitors, a guide, a ticket office, an audio guide, to queue, an exhibit) (it was their home task)

  1.  The T. shows the Ss the slide with different theme parks and  a video with Angry Bird’s Park. Then T. asks whether the Ss understand what they are going to speak about.  

  1.  The T. tries to clarify the difference between an amusement park and a theme park. As an example the Ss speak about Gorky Park in Perm.  (It’s an amusement park)

  1.  First Reading (for gist)

To give the Ss practice in reading for gist.

The T. tells the Ss to open the books (p. 112-113) and look at the pictures. Then the T. gives about 3 minutes to scan the texts and match them with the pictures using the glossary. The T. should remind that there is no need to understand every word.

The Ss check their answers in pairs and then with the whole class.

The answers are:

  1.  Second Reading (for detail)

To provide Ss with practice in reading for detail.

The T. reminds the Ss different purposes of reading and tells them that now they are supposed to read for detail. They do Ex.1b p. 113. They have about 5 minutes to do the task.  During the whole class checking the answers, Ss are supposed to support their answers with quotations from the text.

The answers are:

  1.  After Reading Tasks

To practice reading skills.

To develop critical thinking.

On the slide the Ss see a happy family.

The first question (for supposition) is “Why are they happy?” (They are going to visit the Call of Adventure Park.)  

The second question: “What attractions can the girls visit and which of them are forbidden for them?”

Answers:

2 (D) : 44 inches = 111.76 cm

3 (F) : 54 inches = 137.165 cm

5 (A) : 48 inches = 121.92 cm

Polly can visit all the attractions.

Catherine cannot visit 3 (F) and 5 (A).

  1.  Extension Activity (if time)

To extend students’ vocabulary and to personalize the topic.

To develop Ss’ ability to come to an agreement

On the slide there is a poster showing different emotions. The T. asks the students:

  •  (individually) to choose 3 emotions which people can have after visiting the rides (1 minute);
  •  (in groups of 3-4) to discuss and choose 3 emotions all of them agree with (2 minutes);
  •  (the whole class) to present the choices and choose only 3 (2-3 minutes).    

  1.  Reflection and conclusion

To summarize the ideas of theme parks

The T. asks the Ss if there are any theme parks in Russia. (practically no parks, but not long ago the one was built in Sochi).

It’s interesting to know what theme park or parks Ss would build in Russia. (the Ss give their ideas).

To summarize the ideas of theme parks

To think about theme parks and make a сinquane on this topic.
